ACA Running Thread

Heard about this on NPR. The SCOTUS said the ACA was legit bc the penalty for opting out was considered a tax. Now the penalty for opting out has been reduced to $0; therefore, it can no longer be considered a tax.....or so says a lower court. Now appealed. I guess this now (or soon) will belong in the SCOTUS thread.

It's still here.

Dems are so weak that they can't even mount cases against Trump and McConnell for wanting to take away health care from over 100,000,000 Americans. McConnell has voted over 70 times to do this. Trump is going to court to do it. Why the Dems don't spend $30M+ in KY is beyond any rational comprehension. If they don't spend $250M+ in the general election on this issue alone, they deserve to lose.

I work daily with people who suffer because of our fractured and fragmented healthcare system and woefully incomplete insurance coverage.

And who ignorantly blame “Obamacare” (and Obama). While voting Republican. Clueless that Pub principles and actions are perpetuating or exacerbating their problems and misery.

It’s certainly simpler as a Pub politician to lie your ass off and generate false narratives that scare and hurt people and win power for yourself than to actually work to explain and solve complex problems (more of a Dem approach for some time now).

What complex problems were explained or solved by the Politifact Lie of the Year in 2013: "If you like your doctor... you can keep your doctor"?

Hey guys! Let's focus on a lie from 6 years ago and ignore the fact that the current President averages 63 lies a day! Own it, lubes!

Pretty sure the real loonies like Colonel still say that Obama line on a daily basis to own the lubes.

The case against ACA is being heard on appeal today. If the Appeals Court agrees with the lower court, ACA could be ruled unconstitutional. Both sides will appeal to the Supreme Court.

Over 100,000,000 Americans with pre-existing conditions can afford health insurance because of ACA. If Trump gets it overturned, 2020 becomes a one issue election.

Hell, for trying to get it overturned, it should be the #1 issue.

At this point i wouldn’t want the law to be overturned. Too many people would be hurt.

That being said the ACA didn’t make HC affordable for 100,000,000 Americans. That’s just non sense.

HIPPA passed in 1996 largely fixed the pre ex issue in the group segment. And pre ex is irrelevant in Medicaid and Medicare.

The aca gave people who don’t have access to coverage from their employer guaranteed access to insurance. If they make less than 400% of the FPL it was somewhat to very affordable. If you make over 400% the affordability is questionable.

Again. I hope the law is maintained and fixed. But let’s not spread even more mis information.

What’s holding the law together right now are the masssive premium subsidies not the individual mandate. That should be an easy point to argue. I can’t see Roberts changing his mind so when it makes it to scouts you would hope we end up in the same place. Pubs are also missing the long game here.

M4All highly unlikely until you kill the aca. Then all bets are off. Then the real craziness begins. If the right hates a program that impacts a small
portion of Americans just wait until the dems mess with everyone’s healthcare.

What’s funny is under M4A, you can keep your doctor because every doctor would under M4A.

Obama’s “lie” was more a misstatement, probably, rather than something he said to intentionally mislead. There’s nothing in the ACA that requires anyone to change doctors. But if you purchase a new insurance plan (just as before) and your doctor isn’t in the new network then it might be more cost efficient for you to change.

Anyhow, since there’s no provision requiring all plans to cover all providers, his statement was clearly untrue. Not unreasonable to claim it was a lie. But not necessary either.

Also hardly the most pressing problem with our healthcare system either before or after ACA.

By far the easiest positive move forward would be to strengthen and expand on the ACA. And add a public option.

For sure, any positive change (resulting in better coverage for more or all people) is coming from the Dems.

I generally agree with this but it was a significant reason why the plan got passed. People did lose their plans (a small % in the grand scheme of things) and their docs in the process. And many people loved their plans and wanted to keep them. I do think the lie was in part intentional and it helped pass the law but the # of people it impacted was small. It now gives the right the perpetual come back, again as small as it was.

Every doctor doesn't participate/accept Medicare (most do). However, given providers claims they lose $ on medicare and medicaid patients, I could easily see a scenario where that % increases and the system splits.

As you know, there is a massive difference between Medicare and Medicaid in regards to losing money on patients, which is why the proposal is Medicare (not Medicaid) for all. There might be a very slight increase in the number of physicians that do not accept Medicare in M4A proposal, but that would remain a small percentage of physicians (probably 5%).

There is plenty of money in the medical system in this country to provide everyone care at M4A rates. Plenty. It's sloshing around all over the place. Go to your local country club directory and see how many of the members are doctors, hospital executives, insurance executives, medical device salespeople, etc. etc. The claims that hospitals "lose money" on Medicare are just like the claims that big time college athletics departments "lose money". Sure, maybe the entity loses money on paper, but all the humans running the entity are making huge dollars and living large. The claims that the medical system "can't afford" to provide care to the poor are just like the claim that college athletics "can't afford" to pay players - in both cases, it's not true at all, it's just that the incumbent people making bank off the system don't want to share the profits.

Ignoring the difficult comparison to NCAA athletics, this is almost all true. However, there are many physicians that would be happy to switch to M4A plan because it would improve care and greatly decrease the hassle of current medical practice in the US (among other reasons). Again, Medicaid rates wouldn't work, but Medicare would.

The "lie" was ham-handed messaging not an intentional way to deceive the public. Most who "lost" coverage was about their plans previously not including all the mandated items or the insurance company raising prices to reach the norms set by ACA.
