ACA Running Thread

There were certainly Obamacare jokes told at both of the family Thanksgiving dinners I went to today. I guess one thing we could all be thankful for is that there were no Organizing for America members at either meal, God be praised!

I guess RaleighDevil thinks Thanksgiving is for going to the internet to complain about people hyping up Obamacare.

I feel like passing ACA was like the Democrats catching the tiger by the tail. They have always chased it, but now that they have it, what in the world are they going to do with it. In the end it is savage beast, and you had better be sure your plan is fool proof or it is going to eat you alive. Right now all they see are teeth and claws.

Yeah, but so much of what this is about right now is just extreme incompetence. Building a web site is not like trying to land a man on the friggin' moon. The Feds would prosecute companies for some of what is going on with their own web site. Yet all we hear from the administration downplays these massive faultlines.

"The enrollment records for a significant portion of the Americans who have chosen health plans through the online federal insurance marketplace contain errors — generated by the computer system — that mean they might not get the coverage they’re expecting next month.

The errors cumulatively have affected roughly one-third of the people who have signed up for health plans since Oct. 1, according to two government and health-care industry officials. The White House disputed the figure but declined to provide its own..."

They have absolutely no idea, and will never admit it. John Roberts gets the last laugh.

WalMart prepared for over a year to have a Black Friday/Cyber Monday that was bigger than ever. What happened? Oh yeah, with all that money, all those people and all that planning, their system crashed, had huge delays, thousands of errors and was down for hours.

Whereas the Administration only had four years to prepare...

Also, if you don't like Walmart's services, you are not mandated to purchase their products under penalty of law.

Otherwise, great analogy.

Sam Walton just rolled over in his grave and chuckled at the comparison to the ACA. Walmart is counting their money after a record breaking weekend, and the ACA is a breath away from being DOA.

Pretty big difference between a consumer who has a choice on whether or not to purchase a good not being able to buy a shitty TV for $119 vs. people not being able to buy Health Insurance when they are required to by law.

It is a good analogy except for this part - it is something Pubs chased when convenient as well.

Wal-Mart had over 400 MILLION unique page views on the day it suffered its breakdown. Healthcare.gov could handle only somewhere between 500 to 1,000 unique visitors at a time when it launched - which is beyond moronic when you consider the administrations own expectations on traffic at the time of launch.

In fairness it was 400 million PAGE VIEWS, not visitors. But still, when you consider Obamacare.gov crashed with no more than 1000 visitors at once (more likely closer to 500), the idea you could get to 40,000 page views is pretty laughable.

Yes. 400 million visitors would be quite a crowd.

In an interesting announcement, HHS noted that they cannot send the summary 820s to insurers. The 820 is the monthly summary of all the enrollments sent to the insurer and is the basis of how insurers will get the Advanced Premium Tax Credit, aka the subsidy.

The HHS solution is for insurers to send in an excel spreadsheet what they think they are owed. One issue is that the enrollment cut off is 12.23 and the spreadsheet is due 12.20.

On the call I was on one plan asked of plans could charge CMS for the exchange fees, not the other way around. That kind of made me laugh a little.

Im glad to see the consumer side is improving but man, a lot of work remains behind the scenes. And it does have consumer implications.

Stay tuned.

Good news, the web site will be secure - in about a year.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/101225308

One of the more pathetic aspects of this cluster is how Obamacare cannot meet the types of security standards and expectations required of private entities. For example, FTC Red Flag rules set up cumbersome regulations for how private companies need to protect sensitive information, how they need to respond if there is a breach of security, and what their liability will be if there is a violation. Similarly, HIPAA privacy rules set up cumbersome regulations for how covered entities are required to protect "protected health information, or "PHI" for those wanting another official acronym. On the employer side, companies need to keep health records segregated from employment files and carefully limit access. The list of federal expectations goes on. But Obamacare cannot provide web security?
