Is upward mobility possible anymore?

If you ignore the OP and and just go with the thread title: yes it's definitely possible and more so in the US than any place else in the world. Pretty much everywhere else in the world if your dad is a carpenter is some small shitty town, you'll probably end up being a carpenter in that same town.

Here if you get good grades in school you can pretty much write your ticket to college and then take it from there. Yeah it's not easy but it's possible.
