Disney World Tips and Tricks

2020s technology will improve that ride significantly.

Man I called that reimagining back in early Feb when I went there and the ride was “under construction.”

To be fair, it’s always under construction in January and early February because people don’t ride water rides when it’s cold.

Disney is replacing the Fastpass+ and MaxPass programs with a few new options, including some pay to skip the line options.

Here are a few more features:
  • Get Itinerary Updates from Morning to Night: Disney Genie will continue to update your itinerary throughout your day, so you can be more spontaneous and go with the flow.
  • Find Your Favorites at a Glance: Create your very own personal tip board to instantly see your favorites. It will display current AND forecasted future wait times, helping you predict when you might experience quicker entry to attractions.
  • Enjoy More Flexibility and Fun: Disney Genie brings existing planning features together in one place. Join a virtual queue at certain attractions, make dining and experience reservations, mobile order food at many locations, get help from a virtual assistant and more.
For even more convenience and flexibility, there are two other options for enjoying our theme parks, through a queue we are introducing called the Lightning Lane entrance that also saves you time in line:

  • Disney Genie+ service (available for purchase): For the price of $15 per ticket per day at Walt Disney World Resort and $20 per ticket per day at Disneyland Resort, choose the next available time to arrive at a variety of attractions and experiences using the Lightning Lane entrance. You can make one selection at a time, throughout the day – from classics like Haunted Mansion to thrill rides like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and newer favorites like Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (attractions subject to limited availability). This convenient option is the next evolution of the fan-favorite Disney MaxPass service from Disneyland Resort. Disney Genie+ will also include Disney parks-themed audio experiences and photo features to capture your memories – augmented reality lenses for those visiting Walt Disney World Resort and unlimited Disney PhotoPass downloads from your day if you are visiting Disneyland Resort.

  • Individual attraction selections (available for purchase): Schedule a time to arrive at up to two highly demanded attractions each day using the Lightning Lane entrance – like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom Park and Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure park (subject to limited availability; attractions not included with Disney Genie+). Pricing for this option will vary by date, attraction and park and will be announced closer to launch.
Lightning Lane selections will be made on the same day of your visit and can be used across multiple theme parks, great for those who love the Park Hopper option. Attractions continue to offer a traditional standby queue, or a virtual queue at certain attractions like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance – to maximize flexibility.
While the FASTPASS, FastPass+ and Disney MaxPass services will be retired, we’re incredibly excited about the flexibility and choices Disney Genie service provides. You can choose from all of our new options, a mix of them or none at all, and continue to have a great experience no matter how you decide to plan your best Disney day.

It’s competition at least. The question is whether people stick with a touring plan built for them or the Disney Genie plan built to move people around in ways that will make Disney more money.

In theory there will be no optimal touring plan because Genie will balance the park out.

Overall the $15 price tag isn't bad.

Genie+ is $15 per ticket per day. That’s a good price compare to Express Pass at Universal (unless you get one from a hotel stay). The question with Genie+ is how many you can get in a day if you can only get one at a time.

Will it be hit or miss and you just end up only getting a shot at a few rides? Will it be like Fastpass+ where they’ll guarantee you three and maybe you can go back and get more? Or will it be a continuous process where you ride one ride and go to the app and the next ride is in 30 minutes? Seems like the last one is what they’re saying it is. If so, that’s $15 well spent for essentially a Fastpass for every ride.

aren't the better rides still a la carte? wonder if they'll just put the shitty ones like Small World on there.

It’s not clear if only a la carte gets you the major attractions or guarantees you those attractions.

Disney has spent an incredible amount of money on the most tedious part of the experience, waiting in lines. We’ll see what this does.

In some way this is Disney going back to their roots. Disneyland originally charged general admission and an fee for each attraction.

Yeah the way I read it is fast pass lanes will be rebranded as lightning lanes and Genie+ grants you access to these lightning lanes

I’ve been to Disney 3 times since having kids. 3-4yr cadence seems right because you get to experience new things and your kids can appreciate it at different ages. To save $ we drive and we use points at Marriott / Hilton although my wife was not a fan of Swan / Dolphin. I have younger kids so we always do Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom. All of the kids rides at MK are a blast for adults too - I even like Small World because of how much my kids love it. Maybe someone like Ph can explain but other than Epcot I don’t understand why their adult food is so bad. It is cool to see all the matching shirts and the overall good vibes; whenever I lose it on one of my melting-down kids inevitably there will be a parent who comes up to me with ‘glad I’m not the only one dealing with that’. Every time you go to Disney something unexpectedly cool happens - Last time we had free unlimited arcades at our hotel and the time before we got VIP seats for the Lion King show where my kids were a part of the show.

The park food is pretty basic overall with a few notable exceptions at each park. The restaurants are good to very good although some are quite overpriced.

Disney World announced the new annual passholder program last week.

The passes really expensive with fewer perks and a lot of people are pissed. We had passes for about 13 years and didn’t keep them and got Universal passes instead. We probably won’t go back for awhile.

Is Beach Club a pretty good place to stay? Probably checking that out in a few weeks.

Never been there. Heard it was nice.

Just got home from a quick trip for the passholder preview of Remy's Ratatouille Adventure at Epcot. Knowing it's a copy & paste from Euro Disney, still a pretty impressive attraction. Much better use of the trackless technology than Mickey's Runaway Railway. Would have taken the chance to make a few tweaks from the Euro version, but I'm sure Disney knows it will be plenty popular as is.

What were your thoughts about how Disney's handling Covid now? Did you use Genie+ (is it in use)?
