With the WF 2013-4 year essentially over (there may be some track and field athletes competing in the NCAA regionals this weekend), time to take a look at WF's results this year with a comparison to the historically awful 2012-3 to see if WF has improved:

Fall Sports

Sport 2014 Overall record (ACC) (place in ACC standings) post-season appearance // 2013

Football - 4-8 (2-6) (6/7) NO / 5-7 (3-5) (4/6) NO
Men's Soccer - 10-6-5 (6-1-4) (3/12) YES // 11-4-5 (4-1-3) (3/9) YES (WF advanced to the third round of the NCAAs in 2013 after losing in the 2nd round in 2012)
Women's Soccer - 12-7-2 (5-6-2) (9/14) YES// 14-6-3 (6-3-1) (3/11) YES (WF advanced to the third round of the NCAAs in 2013 after losing in the 2nd round in 2012)
Field Hockey - 12-9 (1-5) (7/8) YES // 9-11 (1-4) (5/6) NO (WF advanced to the 2nd round of the NCAA tourney after not making the NCAAs in 2012)
Volleyball - 16-16 (5-15) (13/15) NO // 11-21 (5-15) (11/12) NO (WF hired new coach in 2013)
Men's Cross Country - ACC 10/14 NCAA Regional 17/35 // ACC 7/11 NCAA Regional 9/34 (significantly worse than 2012)
Women's Cross Country ACC 10/15 NCAA Regional 13/38 // ACC 7/12 NCAA Regional 12/37

Winter Sports

Basketball - 17-16 (6-12) (11/15) NO // 13-18 (6-12) (10/12) NO (WF advanced to the 2nd round of the ACC tournament for the first time in that coach's tenure)
Women's Hoop - 15-16 (5-11) (11/15) NO // 13-19 (5-13) (9/12) NO

Spring Sports

Baseball - 30-26 (15-15) (4/7) NO // 28-27 (9-20) (5/6) (WF played in the ACC tourney play-in game after failing to make the tourney in 2012)
Men's Golf - ACC 6/12 NCAA Regional 7/13 // ACC 8/11 NCAA Regional 10/13 (Cyrus Stewart qualified for the NCAA final)
Women's Golf ACC 8/11 NCAA Regional 9/24 // ACC 7/9 NCAA Regional 14/24
Men's Track ACC 13/14 // 10/12
Women's Track ACC 12/15 // 9/12
Men's Tennis 15-14 (3-8) 10/12 YES // 20-9 (7-3) 3/9 YES (WF was the ACC runner-up in 2013 tourney, but WF advanced to the 2nd round of the NCAA in 2014 after being upset in the 1st round in 2013)
Women's Tennis 12-13 (3-11) 13/15 NO // 3-19 (2-9) 11/12

No ACC titles. No ACC regular season titles. No 2nd place finishes.

One additional post-season appearance in 2013 (field hockey) than 2012. While the overall performance was similar to the weak 2012-2013 year, there was a general slight improvement considering the ACC was bigger and deeper in 2013. Hoping for a better 2014-5 year with new coaches in football and men's basketball.

As expected. Another historically terrible year. Wellman is the new crook at WFU as he robs the coffers with no return. HE needed to be gone yesterday and if the BOT can't see that they should all resign.

The spring season started out really good and pretty much every program fell apart.

In conclusion, we suck.

I think some of our field athletes have been pretty good this year. Off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure we have had a school record in pole vault, and I'm pretty sure Jessie Merckle won her second straight ACC Championship in javelin.

But, but, Deacon Tower

I wish I could remember who and what thread it was a few weeks ago when someone argued with me that the AD's primary responsibility wasn't winning.

Wellman also has the distinct honor of being one of the first AD's in the country to 'sell out'. Only 15 schools in the country have sold naming rights to their stadium and we're one of them.

Boise State: Albertsons Stadium 15 years, $12.5 million (through 2028)
Cal: Kabam Field at California Memorial Stadium 15 years, $18 million (through 2028)
Central Florida: Bright House Networks Stadium 15 years, $15 million (through 2021)
Louisville: Papa John's Cardinal Stadium 52 years, $15 million (through 2039)
Rutgers: High Point Solutions Stadium 10 years, $6.5 million (through 2021)
Maryland: Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium 25 years, $20 million (through 2030)
Syracuse: Carrier Dome Perpetuity, $2.75 million (bought in 1980)
Texas Tech: Jones AT&T Stadium 25 years, $20 million (through 2020)
Minnesota: TCF Bank Stadium 25 years, $35 million (through 2033)
Florida Atlantic: GEO Group Stadium 12 years, $6 million (through 2024)
North Texas: Apogee Stadium 20 years, $20 million (through 2030)
Akron: InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field 20 years, $15 million (through 2028)
Arkansas State: Centennial Bank Stadium 15 years, $5 million (through 2027)
Western Kentucky: Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium Undetermined, $5 million
Wake Forest, BB&T Field Terms not disclosed, 10 years (through 2016)

My takeaway from the K-State mess of not releasing that girl from her scholarship was the damn stationery. At the bottom, it pointed out they had won Big 12 Championships in football, basketball and baseball over the last 18 months.

CHill, didn't realize so few football stadiums had naming rights.

I missed that stationery. Wow.

And remember all the BS about how it would be known as BB&T Field at Groves Stadium? The words "Groves Stadium" haven't appeared in any Wake publication since.

I thought about that when I saw the Wake Sports Facebook post of the Deacon kneeling at the memorial outside LJVM. How long until we sell out and the memorial is moved or gone?

Don't you build all of these new facilities so that you can increase your chances of winning?

In a roundabout way, I guess. But there are much more direct routes. Like not hiring [Redacted] or not tolerating a fat and happy football staff while it runs the program into the ground.

Don't you build all of these new facilities so that you can increase your chances of winning?

How's that working for us? The goal is winning and Wellman is not achieving this goal.

I agree with you guys, I was kind of responding to those that might point to facilities to show what a great AD Wellman is. If all of this construction hasn't produced more winning, then what was the point?
