SCOTUS decisions

By 1980, 19 states had petitioned Congress to call a Constitutional convention for the purpose of amending the Constitution to protect the right to life.

Interestingly enough, usual suspects like AL, UT, AR, and IN were joined by RI, MA, PA, and NJ.

You’re correct. I had my timeline off b/c US v. Bob Jones wasn’t decided until 1983. The ramp up begin in the late seventies as a strategy leading up to the 1980 election.

And, as noted later, there have been many - most notably the Catholic Church- that have been against all abortion for much longer. Ironically (townie can give a ruling), much of Protestant evangelicalism’s approval of abortion was in part to set it apart from Catholicism (as many fundamentalist Christians, especially in the South, didn’t/don’t consider Catholics to be Christian).

Seeing that their political power wasn’t enough on their own, they adopted anti-abortion issues to bring in Catholics and leveraged Anita Bryant’s campaign against the LGBTQ community to bring in a broader coalition.

As opposed to Evangelicals, at least the Catholic Church is consistent in their "pro life" stance. Along with their opposition to abortion, they are uniformly against the death penalty.

Both sides of this argument here can be simultaneously true. Abortion was immediacy controversial among Catholics and some northern conservatives, a relatively small part of the electorate nationally, but was not an issue for evangelicals until the GOP decided to really ramp up the politics around Roe in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Also, Henry Hyde was a piece of shit.

Henry Hyde. I remember him well. During the Clinton impeachment process he was the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and helped to guide the impeachment proceedings against Clinton. When it was revealed that he had had an extramarital affair with a secretary (who was also married), he explained the affair as a "youthful indiscretion." He was actually 41 years old at the time, and had two kids. He also excused Oliver North and other members of the Reagan Administration lying to Congress in the Iran/Contra scandal on the grounds that they were all fighting communism at the time, and he was implicated in the big Savings & Loan scandal back in the 80s, which led to a federal government agency suing him for "gross negligence" (they eventually cut a deal that completely let him off the hook). Even then GOP hypocrisy knew no bounds.

I posted years ago that Republicans were aiming to overturn Brown and people said I was crazy.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has pancreatic cancer again. Looks to be localized.

Can she make it through the election?

Known for his unassailable integrity, Moscow Mitch McConnell, has established his belief in the Biden Rule, so we surely wouldn’t see her replaced before the election.

No. It’s about how Republicans have instituted policies aimed at resegregating schools and society. Failure to affirm Brown is just icing.

just started a thread about...great minds think alike...or should you be very scared about thinking like me?

Apparently new Kavanaugh allegations emerge and evidence that he lied during senate confirmation hearings.

Harris and Klobuchar are calling for impeachment hearings.

He'll never be impeached unless the Dems get to 67 votes in the Senate and we have a Dem POTUS, so it's not happening. The GOP, as usual, got away with one. The fact that the GOP's 5-4 majority consists of two men with multiple credible accusations of sexual harassment (and in Kavanaugh's case, assault) ought to be troubling to any citizen, but Trumpites don't care, and are thrilled with his selection, including many GOP women. So we now have two permanent justices - one of whom is young enough to be on the SC for decades - who likely harassed and assaulted women when he was younger. That the Trumpite FBI didn't properly or fully investigate at least one of his accuser's accusations is also no surprise whatsoever. And Kavanaugh will be making key votes on all sorts of issues crucial to women, including abortion rights. Whoopee!

What if the new, Dem AG charges Kavanaugh with perjury? They might not need 2/3...
