Also, I should stop posting on this thread. 3 out of my 6 all time neg reps have come from this thread.

My friend Beth is in Times New Viking, and their new album on Merge is streaming on NPR now.

Baller namedrop. I really like the new TNV.

Oh yeah, I refuse to be subtle about name dropping Beth Murphy even though she's not even really super famous. When I met her she was an art student who had never even picked up an instrument. Now she is a rock star for a living -- that's her job. Fucking crazy. Good artist, too.

Listened to Kid A in the car last night on a long drive by myself. I can't understand why people don't like that album.

Some of you guys like Titus Andronicus, right?

My buddy was just stopped in and told me his band that he put together, like, a week ago and entered in some battle of the bands between UNC and Duke, won it; the prize was 600 bucks and opening for Titus Andronicus when they play on campus at the historic Playmakers theatre, which has to be the oddest place for a rock show I've ever heard, but still pretty cool -- I guess they have shows there every once in a while.

Fuck Her Tears is an instant classic. I absolutely LOVE that song.

Something very different. Going Wednesday night to see a program of:

At midnight tonight, they reveal the lineup for this year's Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh. I am pumped. Bunch of bands I'd love to see come through town, but I don't want to jinx it by naming them.

Spider Bags is the first name I can recall offhand from the bottom of the list up, because we saw them open for Titus Andronicus. They were a fun middle aged local punk band from Raleigh-Durham.

But going up from there, I'd be super pumped about Frontier Ruckus, Generationals, Braids, and lots more. That lineup is really baller. I'd be pleased if Lolla was anything like that. Lol Superchunk? Wut?

Sleeper picks for best shows - Toro Y Moi, Lower Dens

Two new Radiohead mp3s out today off the vinyl from Record Store Day Saturday

I've seen the bands in bold, and bought tickets but didn't see the underlined bands, which means, at one point, I wanted to see them, anyway (I'm sure I'm forgetting bands that fill either category). At this point, the only band I would make an effort to see again, would be the Dodos. I love Vanderslice, but I don't think I would make a special trip to see him.

Lost in the Trees and Wembley have friends of mine, but I wouldn't bust it to catch them either.

I'm underwhelmed since I would be most likely to go to one of the two "big" shows, which look to be some combination of Flaming Lips, Guided By Voices, Drive By Truckers, Dodos, Superchunk, and Swans. I know people love Guided by Voices, and I've never really heard them, so I guess that's a possibility.

Maybe I will try to arrange some club wandering this year, because there are a bunch of bands about which I've heard good things that I haven't seen, and I'm sure there are good bands that I've never heard of at all, so maybe I will see what the deal is with some of those bands Townie posted.

I like that among the band names are Royal Bangs and Royal Baths, and Weekend and Le Weekend.

But not a lot jumps out at me like BSS, and at least last year I was excited/curious about Panda Bear and was all "whoa, SHIT! Public Enemy!" even if I didn't see them.

Flaming Lips -- old and past it
Guided by Voices -- old and only recently reunited
Superchunk -- old, don't really play all that often, more vested in record label at this point
Dodos -- young, new album, exciting
Drive By Truckers -- eh, they don't do anything for me
Swans -- old and only recently reunited

Regardless, great to have this type of thing in Raleigh, I don't mean to sound like I'm bitching or anything.

I have a lot of the same feelings as El Chupacabra. There is no act who jumps out at me like the Broken Social Scene/Panda Bear pairing did last year.

The Dodos are definitely the band I'm most interested in seeing, although I'd be more interested if we hadn't just seen them last year when they came through with the New Pornographers.

Agreed 100% about the Flaming Lips, Guided by Voice, Superchunk, Drive By Truckers, and Swans, which are the other big names. None of those are really hot bands and I feel like they appeal to an audience that is about 5-10 years older than me, and I'm not particularly young. Moreover, unlike BSS and Panda Bear, these are all acts that have played here relatively recently.

Obviously some of the smaller bands are intriguing, and that's great. I'm just let down by the headliners. As it stands, I'll probably get tickets to that Friday night show with the Dodos, Truckers, and GBV. Wake plays NCSU in football on Saturday, so I'll probably pass on the Saturday night show with the Lips and Superchunk.

Which would explain why I am more excited about this lineup than I was last year's. Never seen the Flaming Lips. They played opposite Band Of Horses at ACL this year, and my schedule is going to keep me from seeing them in Charlotte next month.

Guided by Voices has never done anything for me; interested to see Superchunk, J Mascis and DBT again, although DBT isn't nearly as good with Jason Isbell IMO. Really want to check out The Love Language as well. Also some other bands on that list I'd like to check out.

Really wish we were at NCSU that weekend.

I have to admit that referring to Spider Bags as a middle age punk band cracked me up. All the guys are basically in their late 20s/early30s. Is that the new middle age?

as for the Hopscotch line-up. Yawn. Half the line-up is comprised of locals bands which play around the Triangle quite frequently and the other half are semi popular indie bands that come through here on tour two or three times a year already. The one notable exception would be Swans since their show will be part of a relatively short reunion tour.

Must have mixed them up with the other opening act that night, who were older guys 50s). Woops.
