I took a friend and her daughter to get some ice cream earlier and heard "Higher and Higher" and thought about Jackie Wilson. He was known as Mr. Excitement and truly was. While singing "Lonely Teardrops" at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, NJ, he had a massive heart attack and lived the rest of his life in a coma.

Dick Clark was a son of a bitch to a lot of people. He took lots of payola via "buying" rights. But this time he was a real mench. The perpetual teenager paid all of Jackie's insane hospital bills for nearly a decade when the singer finally succumbed. Clark even paid for family members to visit and for the funeral. This time Dick Clark did more than anyone could have expected him to do.

Jackie Wilson was a monster.

I saw them put on a pretty fantastic show four years ago, or so. I hadn't ever really heard them before. They shred.

I had tickets to see Eleanor Friedberger in Raleigh tonight, but I took off to avoid the storm and was kind of bummed because it was still going on. But they canceled. All good. Hope Eleanor comes back to see me soon, though.

On your recommendation, I listened to a couple of her tracks. She's good.

I think she used drum machines on the recordings. I really detest drum machines. Rock is not supposed to be perfect and there is soul in the machines.

Yeah, this last one is machine-y and synth-y, but she plays with a live band. Her previous two records are more straight forward band-wise. She's not my super favorite, I just like her vibe for some reason, so I support it.

Steely Dan's drum machine won a Grammy, so not all drum machines are created equal.

I fucked it up. Wendel, the drum machine, was just awarded a platinum record for his work on Gaucho, not a Grammy. Still.

The new Bob Dylan Bootleg Series release is all Blood on the Tracks stuff. More Blood, More Tracks. Can't wait to hear the 12 takes of "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go."

Here is an alternate "If You See Her Say Hello." Masterpiece by the master.

Related, I swear to god (Bob) that the version of Blood On The Tracks on Google Play is a different mix than the record I have or the cd I have. I'll need to get off my ass and play those other two to make a true comparison, and I know the quality is probably worse, but I feel like the changes are more material than just the quality of the playback. Hmmmm...

There used to be a head shop on Lancaster Avenue, in Bryn Mawr about four blocks from the legendary Main Point. No one knew how or from whom they got them, but that store had racks and racks of bootleg records. They included recorded and mastered live shows that didn't exist anywhere.

We saw Bruce in there a couple of times. He even picked up a few of his own shows and laughed about it.

Sweet. This is an official Bob release, he just calls it the Bootleg Series, but I wish I had been at that shop. I bet there were some characters.

I love Bob. May just decide to go out with him whenever he kicks it. Don't hold me to it, though, give me at least ten years or so, then we'll reevaluate.

The vocalist here is Dustin Brayley of Trans Siberian Orchestra. The tune is an old blueser, Drowning On Dry Land; we put a new twist on it...Brayley can cut it!

Produced at my place (in Pleasant Gardens, NC) and by yours truly. Ask me if it's lots of work! :)

I think I'm going to go see Richard Thompson in Boston in November. Dude's newest album is pretty tight and he can still shred. My man has been making great tunes for 50 years on his own, with Fairport Convention, and with Linda Thompson, and some of the recent live stuff with his trio on Youtube looks great. I'll find some shit and post it maybe. What a legend though. Should be fun.

Edit - Like this looks tight as shit. It is four years old, but my man sounds great and is shredding and the rhythm section is banging.
