F is for Fascism (Ferguson MO)

The police officer that killed Jordan Edwards:

The earliest entry in the record shows that in eighth grade, Oliver carried a knife and a stun gun, wore paramilitary clothing and was a member of a group called "Caucasians in Effect," in which he posted swastikas in public places and hated anyone who wasn't Caucasian, according to prosecutors.

Like other justice reform advocates, Black Lives Matter has put increasing emphasis on district attorneys, who often shape local justice policy more than famous national legislators. Last year, district attorneys opposed by the movement were unseated in Chicago and Cleveland.

“I think we get it now,” Khalif said. “I think a lot of the activists in the Black Lives Matter movement understand that not only do we have to yell and rally in the streets and organize, but we also have to have a seat at the table when policies are discussed. Especially in terms of how they affect us in our communities. So I think we can do both. We can walk and chew gum at the same time.”

This could go in the Kansas thread, but also relevant here.

In 2016, lawmakers in Kansas UNANIMOUSLY passed legislation restricting the release of body cam footage. A man was killed by police in Topeka, and they won't even release the footage to his wife or his attorney. They will show it to his children, but the oldest child is 13. Police say he was shot at least once in the chest, but death certificate lists "gunshot wounds of back" as immediate cause of death.

Police shot an unarmed man because they thought he was burglarizing his own car

Police say they did nothing wrong in speaking to Jones without his lawyers. “He’s a potential complainant in a shooting,” Parrish told ThinkProgress, adding that officers had not spoken to Jones about the charge against him. “There’s no requirement his lawyers be present for that.”

During his hospital stay, Jones was also reportedly barred from seeing his family, as police stated he was a security risk.

Serious question...does this shit happen to white ppl?

And the reason I ask is we always hear that more white people are shot by the police but they never seem to have stories like this.

Blacks, then, were nearly three times as likely as whites to be ticketed for a pedestrian violation. Residents of the city’s three poorest zip codes were about six times as likely to receive a pedestrian citation as those living in the city’s other, more affluent 34 zip codes.
Tickets for some of the less familiar statutes were issued even more disproportionately to blacks. Seventy-eight percent of all tickets written for “walking in the roadway where sidewalks are provided” were issued to blacks. As well, blacks accounted for 68 percent of all recipients of tickets issued for “failing to cross the road at a right angle or shortest route.”

John Fitzgerald Kendrick, a truck driver, got out of his truck after encountering Jacksonville sheriff’s officers in April of 2015. Once out of his truck, he was immediately ordered to the ground by an officer, who pointed a Taser gun at him. He was arrested and issued a ticket for “walking in the roadway where sidewalks are provided.” Kendrick fought the ticket and it was dismissed by a judge.
Brianna Nonord, 13, wound up in handcuffs and detained by an officer that same month in 2015 after she walked away from an officer trying to write her a ticket for having “failed to cross in a crosswalk” on her way home from school.
