Official thread about the movie you just saw

Muscle Shoals on Netflix. Great if you like music docs.

Yep great one.

Saw gone girl last night. It was good.

Edit: just read back a page or so and the gone girl posts. We mentioned the score walking out too, sounded great. Affeck is not my favorite but his deadpan worked for the character. It was long but the script and direction held me in suspense and misdirected me well.

agree regarding muscle shoals.

kinda cool how people from an island in europe and nowhere alabama combined to create such great timeless music

Definitely. One if those great alignments of the cosmos I suppose. That documentary almost brought me to tears a couple of times

Watched "Chef" on demand yesterday and thought it was very entertaining, but unsubstantial. It's the kind of movie that you enjoy watching, but doesn't give you anything to think or talk about afterwards. It hits all the emotional beats that you expect it to after seeing the trailer, except for one awkward scene with Robert Downey Jr.
Watched the original Frankenstein on bluray afterwards.

Watched Sunrise: A Tale of Two Humans (1927) last night. Sight and Sound ranks it as the 5th greatest film of all-time. I thought it was simple, slow, and pointless.

Saw Fury and enjoyed it. It really wants to be "Saving Private Ryan In a Tank" and fails at that, but the action is really well done and there is plenty of it. Tank battles are intense as hell.

Saw Book of Life with the family tonight. Good movie. Splits the difference between Disney charm, Pixar high-concept, and Dreamworks silly pop songs and stunt casting (although one was very good and fitting).

YMMV on taking a young child to a movie about death and afterlife. My 5 year old did say a very sweet thing about my wife's grandmother being in the Land of the Remembered. She passed away when my wife was a little girl.

Fury had an exceptional first 90 mins that was ruined by a complete and utter dogshit ending. Thematically, every idea was set up in the first 3/4's of the movie was ruined by the end. It's hard to speak too much more to why I was so pissed off by the ending without spoiling it for everyone, but I'll second the intensity of the tank battles and the absolute brutality of some of the action sequences, and the cinematography was exceptional. Still, I left the theater angry.

Saw Into the Storm last night at the 2.50 theater and it was better than I expected, pretty well done for disaster porn. It reminds you of the disaster experience rides at Disney or Universal studios.

After that, I watched The Descent on bluray and remembered how brutal it was. An awesome horror flick.

This afternoon I just watched the bluray of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Damn what a great film. Great ensemble casting and acting, beautifully shot and directed, great atmospheric music by Nick Cave. The interplay between Pitt and Casey Affleck is mesmerizing. This has to be one of the great underrated films of this generation.

Gone Girl. That was fucked up. Written by a woman so not a shocker.

Btw, the first song on the radio when we got in the car..."With or Without You" by U2. I thought that was amazingly hilarious and appropriate. Almost should have been in the movie I think.

IMO one of the best movies of the last 10 years. The director Andrew Dominik's next film "Killing Them Softly" was nearly just as good I thought.

Last night I watched The Ninth Gate on Netflix after seeing that it expires on 11/1/14. I vaguely remembered it being the "other" devil-summoning movie from 1999 alongside the more successful (and IMO not entirely as shitty as most say) End of Days. Anyway, I thought it was superb. Flawless direction and pacing by Polanski, beautiful cinematography, suspenseful throughout. It's pretty damn similar to Eyes Wide Shut in parts (especially one scene), so if that's your cup of tea definitely check it out.

This weekend I watched 3 Days to Kill with Kevin Costner. Pretty terrible but worth the $1.50 I spent at Redbox.
