Official thread about the movie you just saw

Get Out. It was ok, not bad not great.

Yup.

Watched Arrival over the weekend. Wife loved it (and doesn't usually like sci-fi). I had already read the short story it was based on, but still thought they did a good job, aside from adding some cheesy Hollywood elements to make it more "action-packed."

Ingrid Goes West was strange. The tone was just uncomfortable. It's like that Black Mirror episode about social media score, but it looks like an iPhone commercial. Then Ice Cube's son is obsessed with Batman. I don't know how the hell this got labeled a comedy, it's not ever funny.

Few this weekend

The Glass Castle - I love Woody Harrelson but this was a bore. It's similar to Captain Fantastic but just take out all the humor and make it drag interminably and you get The Glass Castle

Thor Ragnorak - I think hits the right tone for these movies - on the funny/serious spectrum this tended more towards funny but still had stakes enough to be important to the MCU

The Lost City of Z - Good character study (I guess), but also is and felt way too long

Caught an uncensored version of American History X over the weekend. It's incredibly sad how much more relevant that movie is now than it was 20 years ago when it debuted.

We need to open our eyes. There are over 2 million illegal immigrants bedding down in this state tonight! This state spent $3 billion last year, on services for those people who have no right to be here in the first place!$3 billion! $400 million just to lock up a bunch of illegal immigrant criminals, who only got into this country because the fuckin' INS decided, "It's not worth the effort to screen for convicted felons!" Who gives a shit? Our government doesn't give a shit! Our border policy's a joke! So, is anybody surprised that south of the border, they're laughing at us? Laughing at our laws? Every night, thousands of these parasites stream across the border like some fucking piñata exploded. [the skinheads laugh] Don't laugh! [the skinheads immediately quiet down]There's nothin' funny goin' on here! This is about your life and mine; it's about decent, hard working Americans falling through the cracks and getting the shaft because their government cares more about the constitutional rights of a bunch of people who aren't even citizens of this country! On the Statue of Liberty it says "give me your tired your hungry, your poor..." well it's Americans who are tired and hungry and poor, and I say until you take care of that, close the fucking book! 'Cause we're losing, we're losing our right to pursue our destiny, we're losing our freedom, so that a bunch of fucking foreigners can come in here and exploit our country! And this isn't something that's going on far away, this isn't something that's happening places we cant do anything about it, it's happening right here, right in our neighborhood, right in that building behind you. Archie Miller ran that grocery store since we were kids here. Dave worked there, Mike worked there... He went under and now some fuckin' Korean owns it who fired these guys and is making a killing cause he hired 40 fuckin' border jumpers..I see this shit going on and I don't see anyone doing anything about it...and it fuckin' pisses me off!!

Saw Three Billboards over the weekend. The acting was really good and it was shot well. However, it was very depressing. Some will see that as "art".

Three Billboards was very good. I definitely noticed Coen Brothers and Paul Thomas Anderson influences. I have a few criticisms - the plot meandered and seemed to be broken into needless vingettes similar to book chapters. The dialogue was sharp at times, but also bordered on ridiculous at times, to the point of distraction. For instance, a teenage son endearingly calls his mother a cunt, multiple times. The main character says the n-word for no reason. Those moments don't ruin the movie, but they hurt it IMO.

All those problems...and you still say "very good"? Wow!

Lady Macbeth is a very upsetting movie. If you have kids, I strongly recommend you do not see this movie.

That being said the movie is gorgeous, the script is well written and the main actress's (Florence Pugh) performance is spectacular but seriously fuck that movie.

Coco was incredible. I loved it. Pixar is getting better and better at exploring individual cultures and still making the stories universal. The animation, music, and characters were all wonderful.

One very impressive factor about Coco is how it approaches death and the after-life in a very smart and entertaining way. Heaven, God, or Jesus are never mentioned, but there are friends, family, pets, and celebration.

Sorta surprised to see no mention of Lady Bird since it's the critical darling du jour. Very sweet movie, Ronan's on a clear path to being a super duper star.

You don’t think teens like that call their mom a cunt?

Saw Last Flag Flying. Was pretty good, I thought. Carell nailed the sulking/depressed father.

Also saw The Big Sick finally. Excellent movie with very good acting.
