More on the UCF Engineering student who created the arm with the use of 3D printing, and then donated the arm through his foundation.
“We were all bound to the belief that no one should profit from a child in need of an arm,” says Manero.

This is exciting but it's kind of hard to figure how you can assess whether a mouse's memory is fully restored.

This is exciting but it's kind of hard to figure how you can assess whether a mouse's memory is fully restored.

"They found that the treated mice displayed improved performance in three memory tasks - a maze, a test to get them to recognise new objects, and one to get them to remember the places they should avoid."
This is encouraging but they seem to make the jump from "improved performance" to "fully restored". I guess they mean the memory if back to functioning normally. Might just be semantics.

Most standard pharmacological approaches to treating Alzheimer's offer little more than fool's hope, with the (potentially) promising exception of intranasal insulin delivery (being studied at Wake!). It's almost certainly going to take more innovative approaches like ultrasound technology to really make an impact.

Report on 60 minutes yesterday about using a form of the polio virus the kill cancer.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/using-polio-to-kill-cancer-60-minutes/

Apparently infecting the cancer with the polio virus makes the body realize that the cancer is not "good self" and the immune system should attack. Normally the body's immune system doesn't attack cancer because the cancer presents as "self" that should not be attacked.

Fascinating, and a really new angle on attacking cancer - getting the immune system to recognize the cancer cells as "not self" and have it attack.
