I thought we'd had this thread before, but I can't seem to find it. If it has already happened, too bad.

Twain, Faulkner, Hemingway, ??????

I think I could make a dozen arguments for the #4 spot. Personally, I might settle on Poe or Steinbeck, but I strongly doubt there would be consensus on that.
 
Morrison, O'Connor, Faulkner, and Steinbeck.

Twain, Poe, Hurston, Pynchon, Fitzgerald, and Hemingway were in contention for that last spot.

Maybe American authors since 1900 or WWII or something would be good for new discussion.
 
I wish I could say Philip Roth, but dude is just so damn inconsistent. It's either a masterpiece or complete trash.
