Danny Manning Credibility Watch

Jeff [Redacted] - 51-76 (17-51)
Danny Manning - 51-63 (17-44)

At least we have a faux NCAA tournament appearance last year to hang our hat on.

The records are disturbing because it shows that we are only incrementally better with Manning then with Bz. All of the recruits are Manning's? What makes anyone believe that the class we have coming in next year will develop effectively under Manning?

Last nights game wasn't on Manning, regardless of his body of work to date.

He generated a game plan that put us in a great position to win that game. He didn't miss free throws, uncontested layups and bunnies.

That in bounds play that got Crawford the And-1 is all coaching. That was a very nicely designed play and should give us all a little hope that he has some coaching chops somewhere in there.

That inbounds play was a thing of beauty. I think BSD had an article about our success on inbounds plays and it's actually pretty incredible

I would answer that question with, "last year." We out performed the predictions of the media and the predictions of our fan base. We finished #36 in the country, 9-9 in the ACC, made the tournament, and had a top 10 offense.

In addition, the development of Collins and Moore are reasons for optimism.

Sure. But he struggles to use them. It was great to see Sarr literally improve by the minute playing extended minutes with Moore yesterday. But I couldn't help thinking why we didn't him do that with Collins and Devin Thomas and why he didn't do that with Collins and Moore.

I am ready for a staff change. Our guards should be the strength of this team after losing Arians, Dinos, and Collins. They all seem to have regressed. Blown layups, unforced turnovers, subpar outside shooting, and especially horrific decision making are the norm. Whoever works with the guards needs to find a new job, even if it’s Randolph.

Agree to this to an extent, but last night was third time in seven games where WF was held scoreless in the last 3 minutes of a tight game (TN, UNC and now State). That is an abomination if it happens once a year; the drought (which was an 4:30 minutes) last night was almost impossible believe. Agree that a big chunk falls on the players (Crawford: 0 for 3 with a missed bunny and brain fart on failing to get the ball over half-court; Welbekin with the most ill-advised 3 of the season, followed up by awful pass causing a turnover; Doral missed a free throw, short hook shot and lost the ball out of bounds on an uncontested rebound), but Manning went back to the four small guard offense when the game was tight and State couldn't score against WF's height inside, and predictably, State scored on consecutive possessions to take control of the game. Not sure what it takes to learn that WF cannot put Crawford, Wilbekin, Childress and Keyshawn on the floor at the same time unless the opponent's only choice is to foul; the plus/minus on that group must be negative a billon.

Verges on the incomprehensible that at the end of 3 games when WF was in the bonus, WF has been shutout for the final 5 minutes against TN, final 3 minutes against UNC, and final 4:30 against State. Agree that the players have plenty of responsibility, but so do the coaches.

You can’t make this stuff up. Virginia 2 years ago was just an omen of things to come.

Not to really veer off track but I wonder if a lineup of Rusty, Blucas, Drum, Cline, Visser could beat our starters this year? I'm only going back to the 80s. Not pulling Hemric and Chapell out from the archives.

Who was the short, white point guard in the mid 80s? He handled the ball pretty well and could shoot. Might need him, as that bunch will get abused by pressure.

Edit: Cal Boyd?

Don't forget that Clemson game that year. If I remember correctly, we blew 2 games with high 90s win percentages in close proximity

I like it. 4 guard lineup with Visser anchoring the middle.

This to me is among the most damning recurring examples of coaching deficiency.

Danny seems to have the really big picture coaching thing down, that is an overall game plan on how to attack a specific opponent - like against State and Syracuse. He also seems to be able to get the micro stuff - great inbounds plays to get an open look.

Where he seems to be lacking is in the middle ground. Substitution patterns. Timeout usage. Combinations of players on the floor. Feel for who is having a good game and who is not playing well at a particular time.

-10 vs. State and -7 vs. UNC according to SCACCHoops. No lineup +/- for VT and Cuse. We didn't use the lineup against Tenn, Duke, or BC.

Along these lines, Danny has seemed to do substitutions a la NBA structures. In the NBA, subbing is fairly set and makes sense due to the length of season and condensed nature of the schedule. College is much different. There is time between games and far less than half the number of games.

I wish Danny would shorten his bench and play our best players a lot more minutes.

DM absolutely sucks. I wish it weren't so. He has no ability to convey mental toughness at the end of games. He shows no emotion so we get run over by the officials, he acts arrogantly, as some have said a know it all. Last night in the post game he bitched about rebounding down the stretch... no shit we had four guards in the floor and still managed to turn it over.

We are terrible. The rotations are inexplicable. Yes he developed Collins, but wasted his freshmen year. Same with Moore who should've redshirted.

I absolutely hate the situation we're in but a change has to be made. Even with improved players we are going to be in a state of constant frustration.

Four years is plenty of a sample size.

Buzz's last team with Tyler and Travis would bitch slap this team.

What about SJM, Melo, and Donovan Mitchell, they need minutes to develop. And Brown. Play him. He had one stupid turnover then gets buried on the bench. Thompson and MW and Childress all need to play much less.

Crawford geez what a disappointment mentally.

Maybe DM will resign and start a big man camp in NC. He is simply not going to make it as a head coach. Maybe the NBA something, but we have a disaster on our hands.

Can anyone seriously say that we have less talent on the floor vs. VAtech, state or BC. Seriously.

Agree.

DM can recruit and draw up some marvelous in-bounds plays. He deserves a role on a major conference bench. Just not sure it's as a HC.

Gotta find a more proven guy next time. It seems tougher in hoops than CFB tho -- CFB there's sort of a natural progression from FCS to non-P5 to P5, seeing Claw succeed at the two lower levels gave us a pretty good idea he'd be good in P5 too. Same sort of structure doesn't really exist in hoops
