Utah and Colorado Skiing

Taking a work trip up to Spokane. Gonna do some night skiing out at Mount Spokane. Any of you hay seeds ever been?

Update, it was pouring rain Wednesday when I was planning on going. It was restaurant week in Spokane which was nice.

Problem with Sugar is that it has like a 200ft vertical that is steep and everything else is flat.

Beech has best variety IMO. I use to be a Hawksnest homie back in the day.

Tell me about it man, I grew up skiing Hawksnest because our family "cabin" was like a quarter mile away so we'd just walk there. The night hawk pass was the GOAT.

Now it's just dumb tubing and zip lining.

it's the only place I do day trips to from AVL tbh.. and yeah I'd just go half day and get there early if I were you

Best part of Catalochee was back when I was in school their lift tickets literally didn't scan and they went with a color code system with a stamp. So i bought two 20 dollar passes in college in ski'd for like three years on them.

I was escorted off the mountain senior year but totally worth it.

Now I feel like I am telling RJ stories. That is what happens when you start drinking at 3pm.

Alta and Snowbird each had about 40 inches of snow this week. Headed out there on Monday with my 7-year-old granddaughter. Her first time on skis. Stoked!

I'm going to be in Park City next week. I don't mind driving. I've only skied PC in the area. What do ya'll recommend for early season?

PC 109/341 trails open
Alta 91/119
Brighton 63/66
Snowbird 97/140
Solitude 55/87

Likely Alta. They have. 50" base and over 100" this season....

Tahoe got 4 feet this weekend. steamboat expecting 2 feet over the next couple of days. I hate that I'm NOT there.

My cousin is snowed in in Tahoe. He’s gotta get back for his shift at the hospital tomorrow. OOPS.

Have you guys had the same set of skis your whole like, and if not, how often do you get them replaced? I keep hearing new ski technology keeps improving but it’s hard to tell what’s legit vs. selling snake oil.

It’s mostly snake oil. I had my last pair for 10 years and had no complaints, but they were the perfect all around ski for what I was doing. For 75% of the skiers out there whatever they have is fine. If you are skiing a lot and in different types of conditions then you may want to look into something all mountain, but usually it makes no sense to get a powder ski if you are going 1 week a year. If your skis are from the mid 00s you should be fine. That’s when skis started going wide. The problem you may run into though is that after a certain number of years ski shops will stop handling your stuff if they are too old. Boots are a different story though, getting good boots that don’t hurt can make a huge difference.

I've never purchased skis. Never lived anywhere I could ski with regularity (or without getting on a plane for anything half decent) and it's a pain in the ass to fly with them. Just not worth it for 1-2 weeks per year - just give me some demo rentals. Having my own boots, however, is pretty much non-negotiable. I've only had my current pair for a few years, but they are the most comfortable pair of Solomons in the world. A friend's boyfriend fits ski boots at a shop at Big Sky in the winter (and is a fly fishing guide in the summer), so I got a great deal on them.

I don’t have skis but have thought about getting boots because I’m extremely picky about how my everyday shoes fit. But I wear my ski boots pretty tight and I’ve always been happy enough so I’ve never pulled the trigger. Also, I don’t want to have to travel with my boots so I’m happy enough.

The issue isn't old skis, the issue is old bindings. If they're older than 10ish years, they could fail on you mid-run. They're no longer indemnified and shops won't work on them. On the ice coast, I'm still rocking my K2 black magics from 2004, but with new bindings a couple of years ago. I also got new boots last year, and it was well worth it! I got some hand-me-down Volkl RTS skis that are about 7 years old. Looking forward to trying them out this year.

The old adage is date your skis but marry your boots. If you're flying you can rent skis there, but you should bring your boots!
