Perfect Albums

in part due to this thread, I listened to Outlandos D'Amour this morning and feel that it deserves a mention, 44 years after release

that's one of my favorites, but the last two tracks are pretty bad. especially the ridiculous soliloquy in the middle of be my girl.

eta: i actually think this album might qualify if it were only the first eight tracks

The only things on The Unforgettable Fire that bother me are

  • King was shot in the late afternoon in Memphis, not early morning, so that sort of ruins Pride for me
  • 4th of July and Elvis Presley and America kind of bore me and earn a skip

I do love the album though and have been to Moydrum Castle where they album artwork was photographed.

not sure if this is totally logical, but imo it's realllly tough for me to think a studio album to be perfect.

e.g.

1/ to me, tten is clearly not a perfect album bc some of the second half is weak, especially deep with super corny lyrics (but not as corny as the album cover). not perfect.

2/ i agree joshua tree is a no-skip album (i actually really like the second side), but the rhythm section is pretty consistently weak throughout the album.

3/ exile on main street is one of my favorites but shake your hips > casino boogie should have been about a minute or two shorter and had mick taylor doing more solos vs keith. and the turd on the run / ventilator blues section drags a bit. probably would have dropped the turd.

will criticize more non-perfect albums later

Bono acknowledged the error and often says "early evening, April 4" at live performances.

Agree on 4th of July.

I like Elvis Presley in America, but it shows that Bono improvised the melody and lyrics the first time he heard the music.

It's the most Eno of all the Eno/Lanois albums. It's why the filler of 4th and Elvis works for me. With the exception of Indian Summer Sky, side 2 is one giant chill pill. Promenade would've fit nicely there.

Already been posted but Workingman's Dead and American Beauty both in 1970 are a hell of a 1-2 punch

I don't like High Time following Uncle John's Band

yeah was about to say the same thing. such a buzzkill, i always skip. get rid of it and slot in mason's children into #3 and it's way better. /notperfect

on american beauty, attics of my life and esp. candyman shoulda been a minute or two shorter. /notperfect

How has this thread gotten to 10 pages without mentioning elvis costello?
