Ongoing US GOP Debacle Thread: Seditious Republicans march toward authoritarianism

What a dick, she had already corrected someone beforehand and he heard it.

My wife is on the zoning commission and I have overheard a few meetings since the pandemic has forced them to be telecommunicated. They are shitshows

“Birthed” a nation huh. When the morons speaking for the GOP these days try dog whistling it just sounds like yelling.

One function of genocide is wiping out the culture of a people. And even still the colonizers couldn’t come up with original names so they kept the names Native Americans used. So that’s a lasting element of Native American culture.

Glad the tweet puts CNN on notice. It’s well past time to cancel Santorum.

It’s extremely difficult to sit down to an American dinner table and not encounter Native American culture. They developed most of the food crops Americans consider to be staples.

Good point. But don't forget about the huge impact the Native American culture also had in developing the senior US Senator from the commonwealth of Massachusetts.

And somehow, when Santorum talks about "American" culture I have a hunch he's really talking only about white American culture. Those minorities didn't contribute much, you know, except for their blood, sweat, and tears over the centuries to build our civilization (or like Native Americans, just lose their land to whites). Most of the world view of people like Santorum probably resembles a 1950s sitcom.

Yes, and we frequently see the euphemism "ethnic cleansing" deployed to describe a continuum of "wiping out a culture of a people" that ranges from genocide to forced removal.

Yeah. It’s amazing how resilient so many peoples and their cultures are on this continent are after centuries of systematic genocide, enslavement, and oppression at the hands of shitty white people. I bet Santorum sits down for fried chicken and corn on the cob and thinks, “Ah yeah. White people did this.”

It's actually quite remarkable to number the things that white people have convinced themselves they've invented.

The creation Myth of our country is a story about starving and sick settlers being helped and saved by Native Americans in Plymouth Rock and then having a thanksgiving feast to celebrate ... and yet here’s Santorum and his stupid claims about Judeo Christian awesomeness building something out of nothing.

Do you know how many things in the Tri-State Area still go by their Native American names or were named that way after the fact? Obviously Santorum doesn't, and he represented that area for 12 years.

This should be a no-brainer move for CNN. Santorum brings nothing to the network. Conservative talking heads are a dime a dozen. Find one that’s much less shitty than Santorum and move forward. Hell, I’ll write a letter of recommendation for Junebug.

The democrats obviously don’t care about Native Americans and genocide or they would fix Rick Santorum.

GOP-controlled Idaho state legislature passes a bill that bans teaching critical race theory in all Idaho public and charter schools. If signed by the governor, which is likely, it will prevent educators from "making students “affirm, adopt or adhere to” belief systems claiming individuals of any race, sex, ethnicity, religion or national origin are responsible for past actions done by members of the same group", and GOP legislators said that "the ideas often found in critical race theory are “contrary to the unity of the nation and the well-being” of the state." To force the bill's passage, GOP legislators deliberately held up passage of key education bills, including a $1.1 billion teacher pay bill. Take that, LibDems!

Good thing nobody is teaching that people in the present are responsible for the past. Time travel doesn’t exist.

Also wtf schools are teaching critical race theory? That's some high-level shit. It doesn't just mean thinking about race critically

Maybe like a curriculum informed by crt.
