Ongoing US GOP Debacle Thread: Seditious Republicans march toward authoritarianism

Yeah, officially proclaiming Confederate Heritage Month in your state is a definite indicator that racism no longer exists in Mississippi. What better way to celebrate racial equality than by honoring the men who fought for four years to preserve slavery? I'm honestly surprised that Mississippi finally decided to remove the Confederate Battle Flag emblem from the state flag (they were the last state to do so).

Begrudgedly moving the needle slowly to the left like that on the flag provides some plausible deniability that the GOP doesn't play up racial resentment politics for their base.

GOP Tennessee state legislator makes the laughably bad argument that the notorious Three Fifths Compromise at the Constitutional Convention was done for the novel idea of ending slavery, instead of actually promoting and protecting slavery as any decent High School Civics class will tell you. He claims that it was done to limit the population and political power of Southern states, when in fact it was done for the exact opposite reason - to increase the population of Southern slaveowning states and thus increase their representation in the House of Representatives. Way to go, dude.

Well the compromise is that the South wanted enslaved people to count for proportionment while not being able to vote and the North didn’t want them to get away with it. So he is right there.

But it wasn't done "for the purpose of ending slavery" as he clearly claimed, the South agreed to it to gain representation, not end slavery.

The effort to dump Liz Cheney is the consequence of a party that lost its way

This is more correct than not. Republican Party degeneracy has been accelerating since approximately 2008-2010 with the rise of the Tea Party and the (unfortunately enduring) preference for (now dependency on) using lies and fear mongering to attain power.

…The majority of Republican lawmakers appear to have stopped believing in truth — or lack the courage to speak the truth…

… Yet principled conservatism no longer seems in vogue among the bulk of the Republican Party. Fealty to the former president, no matter what he says, is more important. That and winning power at whatever cost to truth.

For a decade, Republican leaders in Congress have been intimidated by the party’s grass-roots base, beginning with the tea party activists who helped elect a new class of House members in 2010 that came to Washington to block and obstruct…

… The story of the Republican Party in 2021 has been described as a battle for the party’s soul. In reality, the battle is over, at least for now. Cheney and Romney and a handful of others daring to speak the truth about Trump’s election lies are on the losing side…

Not much of a consequence. Republicans can keep purging non-believers and rigging the system and it won’t hurt them unless Democrats actually help the American people.

…and win the messaging war.

Of course, they’ll get essentially zero cooperation from Republicans when attempting to do anything decent, necessary, or helpful. Any such efforts will be obstructed and grossly mischaracterized by Republicans.

Who knew the Tunnels Left would be so supportive now of Mitt Romney when less than 10 years ago our current president claimed Romney would put black people back in chains if elected in 2012.

I am reading elsewhere in the tunnels that real republicans are feeling the hangover of the Trump era and are starting to take their party back.

Just some quick research to counter the narrative that Liz Cheney isn't a "team player."

Liz Cheney votes with McCarthy 92% of the time. The major votes they disagreed on were McCarthy voting with the Democrats including Cheney voting against replacing statues of Confederate soldiers in the Capitol.

Her likely replacement, Elisa Stefanik votes with McCarthy 84% of the time. The major votes they disagreed on were Stefanik voting with the Democrats.

Yeah, this isn't about not being a team player.

saw a car with a Cruz 2016 sticker on it yesterday. what's the play there? laziness or trying to remind people they made a mistake that year?

More GOP tolerance and respect for medicine and science (and probably Asian-Americans and teachers) on display here. This Asian-American school board member was a called a Communist amid parental protests of schools continuing to require students to wear masks in class. One guy taunted her with "This is Santa Rosa County, not China." The article also contains this mention of GOP rising star, FL Governor Ron DeSantis: "In Florida, where some counties and cities continued to require masks, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed an executive order Monday invalidating local emergency orders, saying they were no longer needed. The state’s department of education later clarified that the order did not affect school districts. The governor’s announcement happened after the Santa Rosa meeting, where some parents echoed arguments that DeSantis and former president Donald Trump have made that masks can have detrimental effects on children." What a great guy he is!

LOL. Another GOP loon. I love the part where this guy - who has apparently been an attorney for decades - explains having his 40-years-younger girlfriend turn up dead in his bathtub in 2013 by claiming that she died from alcohol intoxication of truly epic proportions. He clearly doesn't understand what BAC means: "In short, the best way to start with this is the Medical Examiner's report. She was a .45 BAC. That means that 45% of her blood was alcohol!!! The cause of death was alcohol intoxication, but because she was found in my tub, everyone, including myself, assumed she drowned." Good God.

Imagine being dumb enough to think that anyone could drink enough alcoholic beverages that their blood could be 45% alcohol. Now imagine that person is an attorney. Now imagine that they're running for District Attorney as a Trumpite Republican who believes that the incumbent Philly District Attorney they're running against is being funded by shadowy George Soros money. He's also apparently represented some prominent Philly mobsters over the years. Actually, when you think about it, maybe he is a perfect Trumpite candidate for office these days.
