Ongoing US GOP Debacle Thread: Seditious Republicans march toward authoritarianism

I know the text book difference between a democracy and a republic. But it seems like when right wing nuts emphasize that "we're not a democracy, we're a republic" that they mean something much more sinister than just splitting hairs between voting directly on issues versus electing representatives.

It’s a way of saying government should have the power to restrict rights of individual citizens to elect representatives and hold them accountable.

That's basically been their excuse for Trump all along: his personal behavior is reprehensible, but better than a democrat!

Everything I see on Facebook refers to some ambiguous corrupt, reprehensible standard that Democrats set, thus everything Trump is doing is justified. Just dont ask them to give you examples. All you will get are easily disproved crackpot conspiracy theories.

They wanted an empty suit non-thinking moron who would sign whatever they put in front of him. They got that for a while, good for them. Now the moron is feeling freer to act on its impulses and its handlers keep leaving the doors open.

It’s really pathetic how they rush to defend him for any perceived slight that might bruise his delicate ego.

It's really telling that even when one of them tweets something stupid (which is pretty often), they still stick to the tried-and-true talking points. "East Coast Establishment/Elites" or "Coastal Elites" have been among the main GOP buzzwords for the past four years. Given that 66 million people voted for the "Coastal Elite" candidate and just 63 million for Trump, Democrats aren't really the elite minority, but the majority. But Trumpites will keep repeating that mantra mindlessly through the November election at least. Not to mention that Trump is a New Yorker who has privately said many disparaging things about Heartland USA over the years. He loves their adoration, but he would never live there.

Former First Lady of Arkansas = coastal elite

Guy who owns hotels and resorts almost exclusively on the East and West Coasts = not coastal elite

I'm still blown away that Joe Walsh of all people is one of the few beacons of truth from the right.
