Ongoing US GOP Debacle Thread: Seditious Republicans march toward authoritarianism

The end is a good example of GOP cognitive dissonance. They want to be the ones exercising the violence.

————
On page 1,776 of his PDF, he writes something that would ring chillingly accurate this week: “The Feminists should be careful in their meddling with nature. There are 300 million firearms in this country, and most of them are owned by guys.”

And on page 1,880: “It makes no sense for men to disarm in the face of an evil that wants to exercise totalitarian power over them. They have a right to revolt against that tyranny, to take it down. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the tyranny of George III or the Feminists.”

———-

By the way, it’s still worth investigating if this has anything to do with Salas being assigned the Deutche Bank case.

Hmm. Just yesterday GOP Rep. Ted Yoho of Florida confronted Dem Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on the steps of the Capitol. He was coming down the steps of the Capitol, saw AOC coming up the steps some distance away, and decided to challenge her "on issues of crime and policing in an unusual — and decidedly personal — confrontation." According to an article on The Hill website "In a brief but heated exchange, which was overheard by a reporter, Yoho told Ocasio-Cortez she was "disgusting" for recently suggesting that poverty and unemployment are driving a spike in crime in New York City during the coronavirus pandemic."

"You are out of your freaking mind," Yoho told her.

Ocasio-Cortez shot back, telling Yoho he was being "rude."

After the exchange they parted ways, but Yoho was overheard offering "a parting thought to no one in particular...Fucking bitch, he said." AOC later said "That kind of confrontation hasn't ever happened to me — ever," she said. "I've never had that kind of abrupt, disgusting kind of disrespect levied at me." Yoho refused to discuss the exchange, only saying "No comment."

If nothing else, it's clear that many male GOP members of Congress have real issues with feminists, and strong women in general.

It’s amazing how much she triggers them. You know the GOP is just not prepared for a world in which a talented smart young Latina has the same access to power as boorish unremarkable white men who have inherited power and privilege.

Just following the lead of Dear Leader. Emulating his hero, so to speak.

I'm just trying to imagine the nuclear meltdown that would be happening if a male Democrat did the same to, say, Elise Stefanik.

Maybe that's why they decided to fabricate a rude comment from a reporter.

So Yoho offered an apology (of sorts) on the floor of the House today, after facing calls from leading House Democrats to do so, and from GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy. “I rise today to apologize for the abrupt manner of the conversation I had with my colleague from New York. It is true that we disagree on policies and visions for America, but that does not mean we should be disrespectful,” Yoho said.

However, he did not acknowledge using the words "fucking bitch", and seemed to excuse it by saying that it was "not spoken to my colleagues", even though it was overheard by at least one reporter. He also defended himself by claiming that "I cannot apologize for my passion or for loving my God, my family and my country.” AOC publicly refused to accept his apology, saying that she felt it was insincere and tweeting:

"Republican responds to calling a colleague “disgusting” & a “f—ing b*tch” w/ “I cannot apologize for my passion” and blaming others. I will not teach my nieces and young people watching that this an apology, and what they should learn to accept. Yoho is refusing responsibility."

AOC later elaborated that Yoho in his floor speech "Does not apologize or name any action he did. Does not accept responsibility. Lies (this was not a "conversation", it was a verbal assault). Distracts by making it about poverty (ironically). Says everyone else is wrong and that the incident never happened. This is not an apology."

It's a small thing with everything that's going on, but it certainly is revealing of how House Republicans feel about their female colleagues on the other side of the aisle. I applaud her for refusing to accept an obviously insincere, half-assed apology. Oh, and Yoho has been lit up on social media for the "I cannot apologize for my passion or for loving my God, my family and my country" remark. One guy on twitter sarcastically remarked "My love of god made me call her a f*cking b*tch.....I can’t recall if that’s in Deuteronomy or First Thessalonians." LOL.

He’s a back bench Republican from Florida who is retiring this year and he is getting lit up by a first term woman from the Bronx who is half his age.

Sounds like a good plot for some porn.

This guy could be onto something !

At this point Yoho is probably glad that he's retiring from Congress at the end of the year, as he's getting owned by a much younger minority female representative that he no doubt loathes.

I'm condemning what he said because he is a representative and there is no place for that in civil discourse. But a small part of me recognizes that if I were term limited my decorum would be less than ideal.

She handled this very well.
