wedding party cost question

Two marriages of friends got divorced within one year. In both I was friends with the woman. The first married an addict who was a complete loser. The other married a guy I didn't know. One night her husband stayed up late while she went to bed. She woke up and caught him enjoying some videos on the internet. His response was to choke her. I didn't have to shell out much for either wedding so no big whoop.

Christ, were these videos like gay porn or something weird he was trying to hide? If not, what kind of prude relationship is this? Might need a poll on what percentage of posters have watched porn with their significant other.

My buddy is getting married in April. He's covering the tuxes for the groomsmen as a gift to us. I have no travel or lodging expenses since I live in the same town as him where the wedding will happen.

Yeah, but being in the wedding party gets you the all access pass and multiple french benefits. Plus everybody knows that you're not just a friend, you're a special friend. So you're the person she wants to hook it with instead of some random.

what's a french benefit? all you can eat croissants wedding weekend? kisses? extreme anti-muslim racisim? all you can mime buffet access? all you can drink wine? jerry lewis?

They are a lot like 'radio presents'. The man to see about those is most certainly LilReff.

It could also have been the choking that was the problem.

First of all, I'm now taking all of my wedding advice from the boards. This thread is fantastic.

I polled my guys in the last few days: they were all like, "We'll do whatever you want," although one of them did say that was twice the amount he budgeted for. (I'm 37, and the groomsmen range in age from 29 to 46 - and it was the oldest guy that said that.) My fiancee and I had a conversation about this where I basically said I wasn't comfortable asking them to pay that much. She responded by saying that she had been thinking about it, and since the bridesmaid dresses were around $150, it would be fair to ask the guys to pay the same amount. That sounds much more reasonable to me.

God, I wish we were in Eugene. That's like a metropolis compared to where we are. But she's from there, and her family is all there, so it's basically my half of the wedding party and some of our joint friends that will be making the trek to the Northwest, including everyone on my side of the wedding party.

I'm really intrigued by this gift conversation. I'm always surprised when I get a gift for being in a wedding, but it's almost always something I won't ever use, like a Zippo or shaving soaps - or it's booze, or a tie. What's something better I could give?

i did give the aforementioned monogrammed dopp kit and they went over real well. Put in a 375ml bottle of booze in each one as well.

I got a monogrammed bottle breacher (as seen on Shark Tank!) and it's pretty awesome

Personalized bourbon decanters.

Yeah, I gave nice flasks filled with 100 proof Wild Turkey. By the time the groomsmen got to the rehearsal in the limo, they were all empty.

I got my groomsmen branding irons from Brasky's company, Texas Irons. They are cool as hell.

Also, getting a new suit > paying $180 for a freaking tux you wear once.

My best friend made us wear tuxes with pink vests, outside, no shade, middle of the summer in Tampa at 1:00 in the afternoon. I still haven't forgiven him for that. I don't think a single one of those tuxes was wearable again. The only good thing is that it was a rental and not something I owned.

what is the point of branding your steak?

What's the point of getting another useless money clip?

Its hilarious to brand your steak (plus most of my groomsmen are big grillers/Big Green guys) and the steak brands come with a little hanging display so they look neat.

I just realized that our tentative venue is kind of in between two larger cities so they're each around an hour to an hour and a half from the site. How big of a deal is that?

Do you mean the reception is going to be an hour to an hour and a half from where the ceremony is being held? Or that the whole thing will be an hour to an hour and a half from a major city?

The bigger deal will be distance from your reception venue to hotels. If it's a long ways away, consider having a bus / limos to shuttle people. The last few weddings I went to that involved out of the way travel had very accessible wedding/reception locations or they provided shuttles from a central location.

We are doing shuttles if we pick this place. Her best friends family owns the property and her best friend got married there so we have a good start on a lot of the planning of we choose there.

are there good hotels nearby the venue or would your guests be an hour+ from the hotel? (I went to a wedding a few years back where the ceremony, reception, and hotel were each 30-40 minutes from each other, and there were no shuttles. It was the least fun wedding I've attended.)

I'm thinking of people flying in for the wedding. Although most of them have family in Florida that can pick them up
