Watched Godless last week and thought it was really good. It’s not the most fast paced show, but in total it’s a fantastic ~9 hour western. Worth a watch.
I watched Godless too and while I somehow felt the initial 10 minutes of episode 1 made no sense in context with what was to follow, the show found its footing and really really loved it.
I have been frustrated by a lot of shows though. The comedy The Marvelous Miss Maisel has a great pilot, and a really good 3rd episode, I think, but I finally quit after episode 5 as I realized outside her standup act, I wasn't all that interested in her, her family, etc... I get that the weird relationship with her own son is intentional but I just found it off putting. She's a terrible Mom and I don't care about her so I'm gone.
The Will Smith movie/show I also thought was a trainwreck (as others have said). That said, I am curious as to WHY THEY MADE IT? The seemed to spend a bunch of viewer patience establishing a world with rock faced species, fairies and Elves. Why? Are we going to be subjected to dozens of these movies? Are they coming back? If not, why all the effort to craft this world - as well as an alternate universe/dimension that we never see? Weird. The frustrating thing was this show had potential. For some reason, they start off the with Will Smith swearing like a sailor at his girlfriend about nothing (the fucking fairies). I am all for good cussing. But see Deadwood for how it is done. Make it necessary.
I think TV has been going through a 10 year renaissance so it is annoying to weed through the 3rd wave of shows that sort of suck or weren't thoroughly vetted. Ozark and Bosch were really good, and I have sort of enjoyed some of these Nordic shows that all start to blur together, but for me, The Affair was sort of the apex of what new TV can be - basically a TV version of a novel. Obviously, the Wire was the best ever at it, and the Sopranos, Deadwood, and Breaking Bad were pretty freakin' close to perfect. Maybe now I just want these shows to be too good and I am setting too high a bar.
