Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

141 IP, 126 H, 67 R, 59 ER, 17 HR, 71 BB, 122 K, 3.77 ERA, 1.4 WHIP, .230 BA, 10 W, 7 L. Compare these stats to John Lester.

The combined Cub stats for Alec Mills, Cory Mazzoni, Justin Hancock, Duane Underwood Jr., Anthony Bass, Randy Rosario, James Norwood, Eddie Butler, Rob Zastryzny, Luke Farrell, Dillon Maples and Jen-Ho Tseng. The Iowa shuttle. All but Butler remain in the Cub organization. All but Hancock (60 day DL) are at Iowa. All told, a decent contribution from an unexpected source.

Good to see Lester pitch well. Strop with his eighth save as the closer since Morrow went to the DL on July 19. Cubs report Bryant, Darvish and Duensing all making progress. Not a word on Morrow.

Not a fan of Baez hitting leadoff. Nothing about that makes sense to me. Good to see Lester pitch well.

Montgomery to the DL with left shoulder inflamation. Rosario returns from Iowa. Chatwood resumes a role as starter.

Cubs tie a MLB record with seven double plays in a nine inning game to secure a second straight 1-0 victory. This pitching and defense approach seems to be working.

Cubs and Pirates just played the lowest-scoring 4-game series in just over 60 years

Fitting from one of the streakiest offenses these eyes have ever seen

I like it -- adds some diversity to the lineup. A guy who hits like Murphy isn't necessarily en vogue right now, but a dude who doesn't strike out a ton, hits for average and and isn't always trying to jack home runs could maybe help us avoid the prolonged offensive droughts we suffer from

Murphy is a professional hitter. Lifetime .299 and .323 postseason. A clutch hitter who carried the Mets to the World Series in 2015. Hitting .340 since the break. Russell scratched from tonight's game with right shoulder inflammation. His right hand has never completely healed from the injury suffered earlier in the year. Buys some time to let Russell heal and return Bryant from the DL. Good rental who wants a ring and has the ability to make a big contribution.

You know Joe desperately wanted Cole to get the CG - looked like he almost took him out after the last single.

Cole Hamels - nlds game 1 starter?

Hamels was facing his final batter. Glad he got the DP. Hamels performance reminds me of Rick Sutcliffe in 1984, so game one is reasonable.

Theo and the crew have done an incredible job the past two months securing Hamels, Murphy, Chavez and Kintzler. All four realize they have a legitimate chance for a championship late in their careers and are responding to the challenge. The fact that the cost to secure them is a pittance compared to what they can provide is amazing. Kudos on a job well done.

One problem remains. Who is the fifth starter?

Yeah, Theo has made some really good moves. Hamels seems like a completely different player than he was a month ago in Texas.

Hamels, Lester, Hendricks, Quintana - 3/4 lefties. The Chatwood experiment needs to end.
