Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

Seems like we broke the Cardinals, they have been struguhlinggggg since the Wrigley sweep.

You hate to see it.

Odd to watch Hendricks go from masterful to ordinary. Cishek with 2.1 innings of shutout relief rewards Maddon for staying with his best reliever.

Jason Heyward with two hits puts a 3 for 55 slump on pause. Daniel Descalso goes 0-4 to extend his slump to 7-63. Schwarber goes 3-9 with 4 walks, 4 runs scored, 4 RBI's and a HR hitting leadoff this weekend. I imagine he'll continue in that role.

Schwarber should stick in the role for now. Guy is capable of drawing walks. National League East is pretty tough this year. No juggernaut it appears but four decent teams and a couple of them could be really good IMO.

Cubs poking around Ken Giles - would imagine that is going to take a lot to get, he is back to looking like dominant Ken Giles again and has 2 more years of control. Everyone is saying the Blue Jays are in a hard sell mode, Stroman & Smoak being the most rumored so far.

Would love to get Giles with Morrow unlikely until August at the earliest - but would imagine there will be cheaper pieces they will go after.

Thats a really tough loss - obviously, there are going to be bad calls, and you need to keep playing, but that ends the game and it was obvious for 99.9% of people watching the game.

I like Joe's take on technology for checked swings, makes way more sense than having some dude 90 feet away decide

There were also some reports on the Cubs being linked to Sean Doolittle.... can imagine all those links are gone now haha.

Theo doesn't seem to believe in bullpens. Cubs have a bunch of triple A arms out there.

Nah, he'll bring someone in, they were just not willing to spend before the season. Expect them to at least poke around Kimbrel and potentially trade one (or two) of our top prospects for some relief help before the deadline.

Almost all the spending we did this winter was on relief help with Ryan, Brach and Cedeno - not that those guys are huge names, but it's what they spent their money on. Guessing a guy like Cole Roederer or maybe Miguel Amaya will be the center piece moved for help. Always possible Happ goes too. Or Russell.

Javy does have a flair for the dramatic. Good to see the heart of the line up manufacture a game winning rally.

What? The NL East has 2 of the worst teams in all of baseball.

Yeah, little bit strange of a comment since our division is better

It seems like Schwarber his been hitting .240 or below his entire MLB career. I get he is pretty good at drawing walks, but he's an odd choice for leadoff. Not many good candidates I guess.

Well, Rizzo is available.

Schwarber is a career .227 hitter with a career .339 OBP. He is .182 and .310 in 6 games at lead off this year, .188 and .304 in his career. Consistent if not productive, but Joe has been known to try pounding a square peg into a round hole.

Zobrist may be the best the Cubs have at lead off but who knows when (if) he will return. Almora is hitting .279 this year, but has no BB at lead off. He is hitting .308 with a .342 OBP lifetime hitting first, with most of those plate appearances against LHP. He seems the best choice, but he doesn't walk much and he has value hitting lower in the line up when contact is imperative behind free swingers.

The fact is there aren't any prototypical choices available.

Schwarbers OBP makes a lot of sense in that leadoff role. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone like Donnie Dewees, Robel Garcia or even Nico get a shot at it in the next couple of years. Dewees is a COF, Robel and Nico are MIFs. Or even farther down, Ademan is coming back with a strong year - but likely at least 2 years away at this point.

Rizzo's career numbers at lead off. 166 AB, 24 R, 53 H, 8 2B, 1 3B, 11 HR, 31 RBI, 21 BB, 34 K, .319 AVG, .395 OBP, .578 SLG. He jokingly (?) claims he is the best lead off hitter in baseball. He might be right.
