Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

If anybody thinks that Bote doesn’t deserve to be up then they are delusional or haven’t been watching.

Pretty sure the Cubs all agree with you - they shipped out TLS and gave Bote a 5/$15 to serve as our infield backup guy before the season started. Don't see him going down unless he has some major slump or something.

David Bote making certain his place in Chicago is secure. Cat is clutch.

Joe might want to rethink his commitment to Ryan and Brach. Six of the seven runs scored by the Rockies are the result of their efforts. They did retire one batter.

Wasn't Brach pretty good last year? He has been ungood recently.

He was ok last year - he just lost his control this year, walking eerbody. Hes not as bad as his numbers look, but hes still not good. He also had that issue with his physical at the beginning of the year - not sure if that did anything to him, but we paid him like $1 million less guaranteed.

Looking at the roster. Hypothetical. Everyone healthy. What pitcher leaves when Kimbrel is ready? What hitter leaves if Zobrist returns? I'm not considering Morrow. He is an illusion.

Brach I suspect. Ryan survives because he is a lefty.

Brach would have to be DFA'd. Its going to be Ryan because he has options left. Will need to figure something out about getting another Lefty in the pen, though. Might get a Brach IL.

Could technically be CJ - but he has been lights out since coming back from Iowa earlier.

Rizzo's career numbers at lead off. 166 AB, 24 R, 53 H, 8 2B, 1 3B, 11 HR, 31 RBI, 21 BB, 34 K, .319 AVG, .395 OBP, .578 SLG. He jokingly (?) claims he is the best lead off hitter in baseball. He might be right.

He is right. Happy Rizzo leadoff day.

Bryant sitting tonight with another ankle issue. He seemed to play through it fine last night after getting it check in the first. Hope its nothing major - don't need him missing any time - especially on this road trip.

Or I guess nevermind, looks like he is in tonight. Even better - CarGo starting in RF tonight too. See if he has a good homecoming.

Cubs looking like crap tonight.

Brad Brach update. On May 20, 2018 Brad Brach was given an opportunity to close against the Phillies, He failed by giving up one run on two hits and a walk. In his next appearance against the Phils he was given another opportunity to earn a two inning save. He gave up a run on four hits and a walk. Blown save. The roof has caved in since then. His numbers since May 20: 7 G, 6.2 IP, 18 H, 14 ER, 4 BB and 7 K. As a result his ERA has gone from 2.41 to 6.39. Call off the dogs Joe, a change is in order.

Gotta believe Brach gets sent down soon. He has been terrible. Quintana has had bad luck this year. His record and Yu's should be reversed based on ERA.

Cole Hamels responded to the Rockies hitting Bryant twice last night and a head shot Baez avoided this afternoon. After Cole plunked Arenado, the Rockies hit Hamels and Rizzo. Brad Brach earned a reprieve despite giving up a run in the ninth. He hit Tony Walters in the ribs as a reply for Hamels and Rizzo. Good to see traditions maintained. The players/announcers on Intentional Talk presented the history behind today's incident, which included saying the Rockies "have treated Bryant like a pin cushion". Backed it up by video of past Bryant plunkings.

Brach cant be sent down - DFA is the only option, and I would expect someone would claim him with his low salary and past performance - but he probably needs to take some time off. Wouldn't be surprised with an IL stint for him soon, maybe even before Kimbrel is ready.

Speaking if Cubs that stink, Descalso needs to be removed from his role asap - there is a guy in AAA that is raking and could take his place right now, and potentially allow us to move on from Addy too if his performance so far in the minors is indicative of what he can do. Robel Garcia went to play in Italy for two years, Cubs signed him to a minor league deal this off season and he has done nothing but crush the ball since.

Do you think the Cubs are hesitant to bring him up too quickly?

Wouldn't think so - he played professionally in Italy and is a non-prospect - but hes got skills that someone must have seen. There is no place for him now, though, Addy or Descalso would have to go on IL or something.

He isn't a guy that they were ever banking on, so I can't imagine they care that much about his at bats.

Two years in Italy? Any other info? He was out of organized ball in the US for five years. He came out of spring training hitting and hasn't stopped. Only downside is strikeouts. His numbers are hard to ignore.

LA takes 3/4 from Cubs and should have swept them if we didn’t have an inconsistent closer. Once you get Cubs out of Wrigley, they are very average.
