Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

Cubs defeat the Phillies 7-3. Kris Bryant with three hits, including a two run HR, picks up the slack after Schwarber's explosion. Quality start by Hendricks gains him his seventh win. Rondon gains his 28th save.

Cubs lose to Philadelphia 7-5 on a two out, two run HR in the bottom of the ninth by Cody Asche. Hector Rondon takes the loss. Cubs came back from a four run deficit in the eighth inning to tie at 5-5. Schwarber hit a solo shot in the third. Hammel on the mound for Chicago tomorrow.

Cubs lose to Phillies 7-4. Haren had nothing, giving up four runs in 3 innings. Richard pitched well for four innings but gave up the go ahead run and takes the loss. Edwards gives up 2 runs in the eighth to extend the lead. Only hitter of note was Coghlan. A single, two triples, and a HR netted 2 runs scored and a RBI. Rizzo with a missed catch for the second day in a row. He might need a day off.

We just cant shake the Phils for some reason. Those weekend games sucked.

Need Lester & Hammel to come up big on Tuesday. Going up against Cole and Happ, who have both been hot - need at worst a split in this series to continue to work towards home field in the WC game.

Thought Maddon pulling Wood so early on Saturday was strange. Maybe he doesn't want him to mess with his sense for being a reliever? Either way, think it played a key part in us losing both games due to how much the bullpen wound up getting taxed.

I suppose Travis has been hit hard after he's hit 45 pitches this year, but #smallsamplesizedeac.

Or hell, he could've just kept Cahilll in there. Grimm is just a disaster right now

With twenty games remaining I would be satisfied if the Cubs play .500 or better and secure the wild card game. San Fransisco has won four straight and appear ready to make a stretch run. With the exception of four games vs. the Dodgers, their remaining games are against sub .500 teams. They are a proven championship quality team. The Cubs play 11 of 20 against the three best teams in MLB. The pitching staff, especially the bullpen, looks tired. Over the past 30 days only Arrieta, Rondon, Rodney and Wood have ERA's below 4.50. Rizzo and Schwarber are below .200, though their run production remains good. My concerns are probably the result of past Cub failures, but the nature of the losses of the past weekend are troubling.

My guess is the Cubs as a whole are running out of steam - the pen is wiped, the young guys aren't used to playing this much ball - its got to be tough.

What they need is the September call-ups and veterans to take it from here - plug in players that are a little fresher, like Castro and Baez to get us into the postseason, then put everything on Jake to get us into a series against the Cards where we can throw Lester in Game 1, Hendricks in Game 2, Haren in Game 3 and hope to get to 4 and 5 so we can end with Arrieta and Lester and get a shot at the LCS

We did just go into St. Louis a week ago and dominate them for 25 straight innings.

Our bullpen needs help clearly but if we can figure that out and get some guys back and get a couple decent starts from the Brothers H imoving forward I think we're in fine shape

Cubs lose 5-4. Came back from a 4-1 deficit to tie via 3 hits and 2 wild pitches in the seventh. A walk by Grimm, an error by Montero and a sacrifice fly by Marte in the eighth gave the Bucs the margin of victory. Need Lester to be a stopper tonight.

Cubs defeat the Pirates 2-1. John Lester pitches a complete game, nine strikeout performance to demonstrate what being a top shelf stopper is all about. Cubs defense was outstanding. The breeze you feel is from the Cubs striking out 13 times and exhaling deeply by still winning. Big win!

It was refreshing to see Lester lead off the ninth inning last night. Old school. He was the best option and Maddon went with it.

2015 Chicago Cubs Thread: 82-58 avenge the sweep

Miggy just reached first on an infield single, stole second on his first attempt on the season, and advanced to third on the throw by the catcher. #wearegood

Cubs up 2-1 in the top of the 8th. Arrieta looking for his 10th straight win.
