Pro Life / Pro Choice Debate

I’m sure originalists and their consistent beliefs are very happy with this result in Kansas. The states decided.

Does it really matter? I worry people in red states feel like they can vote on this individual measure then still vote for their right wing nutjob candidate to protect the rest of their “conservative” values.

This. Its a great sign re: abortion rights but until these same people vote against Republicans in an election, it's just that.

Kansas asks the citizens to decide the abortion debate. With 89% of the vote tabulated, abortion rights are winning 63% to 37%.

This is the procedure to restore the right of women to decide what is best for themselves in every state. Take the matter directly to the citizens. Pro choice supporters should bring this matter to a vote in every state in the union. Let the people decide. Not judges. Not legislators. The people.

States should, but it will never happen. Conservatives don't want voters to decide on the issue of abortion because they know most states will vote to keep it legal.

The sad thing is, people will still vote for Republicans even though they think abortion should remain legal, and so long as Republicans control state legislatures, abortion will continue to be outlawed in those states. I hope I'm wrong and this is an omen for November and Republicans won't see the red wave we think is coming.

They tried all the usual tricks - vague / misleading language in the amendment, scheduling the vote for a midterm primary to ensure lower turnout, they even sent texts to people claiming that a "yes" vote would protect a woman's right to choose. All in a red state.

They won't stop trying, though. I'll be interested to see the next steps of Republicans in Pennsylvania, as they were working on getting an amendment to the state constitution on the ballot for next year's off year primary.

Supporters of the measure, who have received much of their funding from the Roman Catholic Church, have emphasized in their advertising that the amendment itself would not outlaw abortion. “It doesn’t ban abortion or remove exceptions — that’s just a scare tactic,” Mayor Peggy Dunn of Leawood, Kan., says in one oft-aired TV spot funded by Value Them Both, a group leading the vote-yes effort. Value Them Both reported raising $2.45 million in 2022 from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese in Kansas City, Kan., and $550,000 from the Catholic Diocese of Wichita, accounting for a majority of the group’s cash donations this year.

Where have all the board conservatives run off to? Buncha chickenshit pieces of shit.

fucking catholics. just leave us alone already. you've already screwed up enough stuff the past 2000 years.

Weird that such a poster would start a thread to celebrate a "recession" but not celebrating the end of Roe.

Conservative lawmakers know what is best for their constituents despite what their constituents say? Why those elitist bastards!

isn't this what happened in Missouri and cannabis vote. if memory serves, it passed but the representative stopped it...can't remember

Rome wasn't built in a day. Keep putting the matter to a vote state by state. Talking points tend to wither and die when the citizens express their preferences by an overwhelming majority.

Plan your work, then work your plan.

So happy Kansans stepped up but I disagree with this strategy.
What women do with their bodies is an inalienable right, not one that should be granted or taken away by anyone whether they are a majority or a minority.
What we need is Federal Constitutional Amendment that says such. Oh wait, we have one. WTF?
It's called the XIV Amendment....."No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of Citizens of the United States"......
Stick that up your asses, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Barrett, Thomas and a special up yours to Alito!!!

The Idaho law that the DOJ is suing over highlights the impossible position that health care providers are put in.

https://apnews.com/article/abortion-health-lawsuits-idaho-926faa1d6773e888d1fed10353000e13

People who are charged under the law could defend themselves against the criminal allegations by arguing that the abortion was done to save a pregnant person from death, or that it was done after the pregnant person reported that they were a victim of rape or incest to a law enforcement agency — and provided a copy of that report to the abortion provider.

Advocates for sexual assault survivors have said the rape and incest exception is essentially useless, because Idaho’s public record law doesn’t allow law enforcement agencies to release reports when a case is still under investigation — a process that generally takes weeks or months.

After Kansas backlash, R's starting to backpedal. I think people will judge their actions (horrific accounts of their laws in news and social media) and not their words now
https://www.yahoo.com/news/republicans-begin-adjusting-fierce-abortion-122121806.html

As said before, the dog has caught the car. Now R's have to be hardline enough for their heartless base, and soften enough for the moderates and infrequent voters stirred by this. Watch them dance
What's been a wedge issue for them for 40 years will forever be resolved. Thanks, Trump.

LOL

“Not just the pro-choice movement but the pro-life movement was caught by surprise” by the Supreme Court, said Brandon Steele, a West Virginia delegate who pressed for an abortion ban without exceptions in a special session of the Legislature that ended this week with the Republican supermajority stymied. “Without having the talking points, without being told what to do, legislators had to start saying what they were actually going to do. You could see the confusion in the room.

“We get confused if we have to say what we actually think!! Tell us what to say!!”

Much like Siths, conservatives deal in absolutes and don’t accept compromise. That puts them way out of touch on an issue in which most people including Democrats want a nuanced position on abortion.

They’re way behind if they’re just getting back to favoring exceptions as the genera public is finding out that demanding rape and incest victims to prove their trauma is cruel and the cops make it nearly impossible to do within the few weeks of pregnancy before state laws outlaw abortion. They’re also way behind on the life of the mother as we are witnessing tragic stories of hospital lawyers having to determine whether the life of the mother is truly at risk.
