Feherty out at CBS

Disappointing news. He and McCord are great together and both are creative with the language. While it probably is money related, maybe he also pissed off Nance/Faldo? He did apologize 1 time when Faldo wasn't on the broadcast 1 week that Faldo wasn't there because he was attending the birth of his future wife.

Yes, NBC owns TGC, and that seems like the natural fit. Fox doesn't broadcast enough tournaments to justify hiring him.

That's Sir Nick to you. Don't forget it. Nance certainly never does.

This is an old one, but below is my favorite Feherty story:

"People have accused me of being so far up Tiger’s arse that he can barely make a full swing, but I maintain that he is a special person. There’s no one else on the planet who can do what he does or even think of doing what he does. I’ve often thought, instead of showing Tiger’s reaction to a shot he’s hit, we really should show the reaction of those around him.”

But here is the next best thing. “I’m walking down the 18th fairway at Firestone Country Club with Ernie Els and Tiger, who has popped up a three-wood about 40 yards behind Ernie into some wet, nasty, horrible, six-inch rough,” Feherty says. “Tiger’s cursing and taking clumps out of Ohio with his three-wood. And, of course, we’re not showing this on TV because we want to be able to interview him later. Ernie and I walk past Tiger’s ball, and it is truly buried.”

“Ernie is tied with Tiger and he’s in the middle of the fairway. I’m standing with Ernie and my microphone is open. Ken Venturi [in the CBS booth] sends it to me and I say, ‘Tiger’s got 184 yards with two big red oaks overhanging the green. He’s got absolutely nothing. With a stick of dynamite and a sand wedge I might be able to move this ball 50 yards. Steve Williams [Woods' caddie] tells me [with a hand signal] that he’s using a pitching wedge.’

“Tiger takes his swing. Every muscle in his body is flung at the ball. It looks like he’s torn his nutsack. The divot went as far as I could hit the ball. I’ve got my microphone at my mouth thinking, what the hell was that! The ball sails over the trees, lands behind the hole and backs up to about six feet from the flag. I open my microphone and Ernie turns and says, ‘•••• me!”

“My producer comes on in my earpiece and says, ‘Was that Ernie?’ I say yes.

He says, ‘Fair enough.’

Great story. His story after winning the Irish Open is pretty good too.

Sad to hear, have always enjoyed hearing him on golf broadcasts. I have seen him several times at Quail Hollow for the Wells Fargo Championship, always gets large cheers from the crowd.

Yeah, Nance and Sir Nick have got to be the most smug booth team in history and are nauseating. McCord, Feherty and Kostis are what makes CBS's broadcasts worth listening to.

So the article I saw said the 2 sides couldn't come to an agreement on what his ongoing role would be. Really? CBS has their booth guys and then their course guys, and the course guys chime in a lot - usually it's banter between McCord and Feherty. Unless Feherty was clamoring for Sir Nick's booth role, that explanation is a crock of shite. I'm guessing it was a clash between David and either management or Nantz/Sir Nick.

Great Story - Never knew it was Feherty's and that's the first time I have seen the shot. Reminds me how much I used to enjoy watching Tiger during that period. Likeable or not, he was must see TV.

Feherty is big on the speaking circuit. Very expensive I am sure, but if you ever get a chance to hear him, don't miss it. He kills.

He would add a lot of credibility to Fox. They should meet whatever he asks. Unfortunately neither Fox nor NBC really have enough golf to adequately feature him.

Will be very interesting how CBS replaces him.

NBC has the Ryder Cup and eventually the British. They could really use Feherty to play up the Euro angle on each with David's unique and interesting Dallas-based Irish redneck slant. Could work out really well for NBC and David deserves some desk time at this point. He was always very good when TGC put him on the set with Brandel and Rich before the Masters. Get 'er done NBC!

I think Feherty is best as an on course reporter, close to the action and with ready access to the players. Not sure he would be as effective in the booth.

Didn't say the "booth" as Feherty himself would probably say he's too nervous and fidgety to sit still. Think he must have to take prozac or something for the 15th tower at Augusta just to keep from jumping in the pond at 16 out of boredom.

NBC could use him the same way the use Dottie Pepper for the women and even the men's US Open. Thu/Fri recap desk and Sat/Sun walking with the final or penultimate pairing. And he could still get cleaned up and join the post-round festivities at the British Open as he's as engaging and gentile with the players as they come.

Sometimes Feherty and McCord together were a bit much. Hopefully he'll go to NBC and do more Golf Channel stuff. He's not enough to save Fox and it'd be a shame to waste him with that team.

I have to think he ends up doing the US Open and Open Championship on NBC.

McCord is the one I would have liked to see go. His shtick has grown old.

Just saw that Feherty has signed exclusively with NBC and the Golf Channel. The interactions between he and Miller should be interesting.
