Hospital ties Legionnaires’ to Flint water

Flint’s contaminated water likely contributed to the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in Genesee County, where the bacteria was found in a hospital’s water supply, an expert for McLaren Regional Medical Center said.

Water testing during the outbreak found Legionella bacteria at the Flint hospital, where an expert on the disease concluded the organism likely came from the city’s tainted water.

Further, a state analysis showed that a high number of those diagnosed with Legionnaires’ in Flint had been patients at McLaren Flint in the 14 days prior to showing symptoms.

Former Detroit FBI chief to assist Flint water probe

Schuette, a Republican who is expected to run for governor in 2018, announced his office was investigating whether any state laws were broken in the public health catastrophe on Jan. 15, after initially saying his office was not getting involved. Schuette, who could not say Monday how much the investigation will cost or how long it will take, said he changed his mind after there was a flood of new information about the case over the New Year's holiday.

Flood was questioned about $3,000 in campaign donations he's made to the campaigns of Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, among his many donations to political candidates.

Melanie McElroy, executive director of the government watchdog group Common Cause in Michigan, said in an e-mailed statement that "Bill Schuette's appointment (of) a longtime ally and campaign contributor to Gov. Snyder as lead investigator of the Flint water crisis raises serious questions about conflicts of interest and whether he is capable of investigating a political ally."

Flood said he has given campaign donations to candidates of both political stripes and would not be influenced by such connections. Among the candidates Flood supported in the past was Snyder's predecessor, former Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

Are we funding the agency enough so they can do their job?

I know we have nowhere enough food inspectors.

Lol funding. Republicans hate "big government". Remember when almost every GOP candidate said they wanted to shut down the EPA

Seems like a greatest hits track to cut funding, say they're not doing their jobs and then, "government doesn't work."

Gov. Snyder lied: Flint water switch was not about saving money, records show

The Flint water crisis that led to thousands of people being poisoned began because state officials maintained it would save the cash-strapped city money by disconnecting from the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) and using a different source.

But it turns out, DWSD offered the state-controlled city a deal that would have saved Flint more money by staying with Detroit.

An e-mail obtained by Motor City Muckraker shows the deal would have saved the city $800 million over 30 years, which was 20% more inexpensive than switching to the Karegnondi Water Authority.

The Local Government Commission has taken over the finances of a handful of cities during its 80-year lifetime.

NC has maybe the best laws governing the financial management of local governments in the country.

Yep, it is my understanding that NC municipalities are creatures created by the state and have no powers/authority except that given them.

IMo all those who knew the water was bad and didn't act should be jailed.

Snyder tried to pass it off as Detroit kicked them off. LOL in the most sad way
It looks like Detroit didn't offer a reduction until after the plan to move water supplies was put out there so I wouldn't act like Detroit was some sort of innocent player. Had they been reasonable at the start....this situation would not have happened. But they are cash strapped like everyone else up there. I'm sure even the offers were treated with skepticism. The entire region has been getting increasingly f'd up for 45 years.

Must be something in the water up there.
