Saudi World Golf Tour 2022/2023 Thread

Watched a little of both this weekend. Enjoyed both the other St. Andrews course, and Shadow Creek looked really cool.

What, are the final fantasy 3 fans now naming golf tournaments?

Enjoying Sherwood this weekend, quite scenic. The Italy course is nothing to write home about. So the early afternoon games weren't doing anything for me yesterday, and I turned to the LPGA at Lake Oconee - pretty course. I have never heard of Bianca Pagdanganan - a 22 year old Filipino with a great swing and can drive it 300+. On the 18th, she drove it 313 in the rough and reached the par 5 with driver 8. I think I have a new favorite female golfer. Also, after watching that and Sherwood yesterday, I reached the conclusion that Tony Finau and Carlotta Ciganda are the same golfer - long, a lot of top 10s, but never win because of balky putters, especially on Sundays.

Yup.. And as a more general statement Finau has the short game of a country club scratch golfer. He's just not that great around/on the greens. Which always shows up late on Sundays.

This Aphrodite Hills course in Cyprus they're playing this week is pretty scenic and interesting. Though not a great field.

There will a much stronger field for the tournament in 2 weeks. And the course will be pretty scenic too.

This rain delay really blows, was hoping to use the opening round to kill some time at the office today.

Today could be a complete rain out, with the limited daylight, losing a day would most likely mean a Monday finish?

Don't think they will lose a full day today, but it would be interesting to see what happens if a delay backs everything up and causes a later Sunday finish and it bleeds into the 4pm NFL window.....who wins out on Sunday, the Masters or the NFL on CBS? Does that equation change if Tiger is in contention???

Curtis Strange earlier today said that it won't be an issue getting it in by Sunday, the main reasons being good weather forecast for the next 3 days, teeing off on both sides, and the elimination of the cutline including anyone within 10 shots of the lead (last year's cut was 65 players, 10 more than the max. this year not counting ties for 50th). Not mentioned was a planned 3:00 p.m. t.v. finish on Sunday, meaning another 2 hours or so to work with(absent a playoff).

Not mentioned but I think will have an impact albeit a small one, is an improved pace of play w/o fans present. Augusta is pretty compact, and with 40k fans and gallery ropes there's some navigation required to get to/from tee boxes, clear patrons to make shots from the rough, move spectator ropes, etc. And again while a small impact, no delaying or or backing off shots b/c of a roar from an adjoining hole. The only slowdown to play by not having fans present is not having hundreds of eyes helping locate errant shots. But taken in total, these guys should motor around the course on a pretty good pace.

Just heard some these numbers on Golf:

Jack Nicklaus 1986 - 23 years since first Masters win, ranked #33 in world golf rankings
Tiger Woods 2020 - 23 years since first Masters win, ranked #33 in world golf rankings

Interesting, but Tiger hasn't been healthy and in form this year. I don't see it. Too many great golfers in good form. Speaking of bad health, Koepka has been mostly injured this year but is finally healthy and had a top 10 last week. Wouldn't surprise me if he contends.

Sandy Lyle wearing the "My grandfather doing yardwork" outfit, which only a former Masters champion and an 80 year old man with a Bud heavy in his hand can pull off.

Bill Haas tests positive for COVID-19 and has to withdraw from the RSM Classic, where he typically plays well. Tough break as he needs all the starts he can get these days. Hope he recovers quickly.
