Saudi World Golf Tour 2022/2023 Thread

He's making his ruling based solely on DJ saying he didn't cause it to move. Looking at the replay, what did cause it to move if not DJ's putter? It's plausible it could be a spike mark under the ball or the ball was on the edge of a footprint, etc. DJ needs to have the presence of mind to say that could have caused it, because if he doesn't have a plausible reason he's going to get the penalty. The ball moved. Something caused it to move. It wasn't wind. It was either DJ or another excusable factor.

On greens that fast the ball could just move, if it's not very evident he caused it to move then he shouldn't be penalized. The we'll wait until after the round to make a determination is stupid too. It can a big difference how you play depending on whether you're a stroke worse then you think you are.

I agree completely. I still think the USGA will screw him because they won't ever admit they let the course get to that point.

was it dj that got assessed a penalty a few years ago for "grounding" his club in a sand trap the spectators had been standing in all day long? i think it was us open or pga and he missed out on a playoff.

PGA in 2010 I think.

It's why golf's rulings are moronic. They had a ref on the green with him and gave a ruling when it happened. It's over. The ref made a decision.

It's moronic and counterintuitive to allow this to happen in any sport.

Refs in a lot of sports make decisions on the field that are over turned by video evidence after the fact.

DJ just bogeyed.

Rory, Speith and Fowler have all tweeted that the USGA is a JOKE and DJ should not be penalized.

If you have ever played a sport, you know this will have a bearing on a player. It's grossly unfair.

If you ask for a ruling and are given one, that's it!

Isn't the rule in question ball moving after address? Did he actually "address" the ball?

They're saying you don't necessarily have to have "addressed" it, but if you did anything to make it move, like practice strokes or whatever.

Dustin is gonna be fine.

Rule 18-2b:

If a player’s ball in play moves after he has addressed it (other than as a result of a stroke), the player is deemed to have moved the ball and incurs a penalty of one stroke.

The ball must be replaced, unless the movement of the ball occurs after the player has begun the stroke or the backward movement of the club for the stroke and the stroke is made.

Exception: If it is known or virtually certain that the player did not cause his ball to move, Rule 18-2b does not apply.

I never saw hi say "Hello" to it or call it by name.

If the CHAIRMAN of the Rules Committee says it was OK, that should end it.

David Faye said "addressed it" isn't the end all be all in that rule though.

Not the rule anymore - 18-2b was withdrawn for 2016.

Withdrawal of Rule on Ball Moving After Address - Rule 18-2b (Ball Moving after Address) has been withdrawn. This means that if a ball at rest moves after the player addresses it, the player is no longer automatically deemed to have caused the ball to move. A one-stroke penalty under Rule 18-2 will be applied only when the facts show that the player has caused the ball to move.
