Fairly easy to understand the rules. Very tough to win, unless three people quit halfway through the game. Spoilers: this always happens.
 
As for time, the rounds are usually 24 hours, so while there is necessary communication between players, you can be a bit flexible with it.
 
I would argue that it's really time intensive to play it well.

If you play poorly, it's not.
 
I haven't played in a few years, but I'm interested if there's no mafia going on.

I can only scam people as France so effectively if I'm also trying to determine who's mafia at the same time. :)

I suggest being a passive watcher of any one player. The fun of the game is in the negotiations that go on between turns...and the resulting back-stabbings of those negotiations.
