Campaign finance and the need for serious reform

I hope that Citizens United will ultimately be seen as an aberration, like the pre-New Deal SCOTUS decisions that tried to hold back the Federal government from taking action to address the problems of a 20th century industrialized nation state. Plenty of countries have restrictions on political speech and political giving, including time limits on campaigning (so you don't have to raise a billion dollars to finance a 2-year campaign) and they function just fine as democracies. Our SCOTUS has got to come around to the idea that some limits on political speech are necessary to preserve the existence of a credible participatory democracy. It is ludicrous that the freedom of a tiny minority to contribute as much as they want to their chosen politician is considered more important than preserving the faith of 300+ million Americans in the honesty of their government.

The UK has about six weeks of campaigning. They also ban ads have lies in them.

Highly unlikely that either party would ever allow a reasonable constitutional amendment on campaign reform to pass, so SCOTUS is the only option. CA and TX will never voluntarliy disarm on gerrymandering either, but that's nonsense too. Barbara Boxer's former congressional district closely hugs the coast from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon border. Marin County doesn't have the same concerns as rural logging/fishing towns.

What a fascinating concept. Governing to represent a wide array of constituents, rather than rearranging your constituency to fit the way you want to govern.
