General Election Thread: Two Weeks Out

Michael Steele's no genius yet he did a much better job.

Trump held rallies in five states (NC, GA, TX, AZ, and NV) with 'Pub Governors this week and none of them showed up. GOP establishment can't keep pretending he's not their nominee. Base of the party voted for him in the primaries and even if possible, a convention coup would be extremely bloody.

Trump's pissed at the establishment and threatened to self fund. He only has 30 full time staffers and isn't spending $300-500M of his own money on a sure loss.

This is leading to an epic "Fuck All Y'all" speech at the convention.

Remember when people were worried Trump wouldn't support the GOP nominee and run as a third party candidate? Now he's the nominee and they're essentially forcing him to run as a third party candidate.

Glad to see it. I hope they put him on ice the entire campaign.

To your point, there's been no advertising in Texas.

No way Dems take TX in 2016, but surprising that Abbott didn't attend Trump's TX rallies and Cornyn vows not to discuss Trump until after the election. They're not worried about future primary challenges by Trump supporters, they're worried about their next TX general election.

Still think a purple TX isn't imminent, but the Castros have to be encouraged about their individual chances statewide in the near term. Probably rather run against Cornyn in 2020 than Cruz in 2018. P Bush would be better long term for the GOP in TX and nationally than either. Taking on Abbott in 2018 is too early for both P and the Castros.

Trump's a false positive in Utah. Too much work for a relatively small state that would instantly revert back to deep red post-Trump, even in the unlikely case it did flip. Depends on what happens in McCain's primary, but AZ has to be tantilizing for the Dems. TX is a bridge too far, but Abbott's and Cornyn's behavior seems way too calculated in a very safe GOP state.

It should have happened like 6 months ago. There's no rhyme or reason to the Trump campaign, so I have no idea.

He's dipping in the polls now. I would say that's more due to his inability to keep his mouth shut than anything else. Also, the fact that they have 30 full-time staffers.

No idea.

That's not because of Lewandowski.

Curious if the RNC or Trump's kids were the ones who finally got through to Trump that Corey had to go. Trump's campaign has 30 staffers, Hillary has 700 in Brooklyn alone. HRC's spending $20M in swing state ads now and her SuperPAC is spending a comparable amount. Trump has no ad spending via his campaign or any SuperPACs.

Obama destroyed Mitt at this point in 2012. Obama's spending was around $30M and Mitt was around $20M. Trump doesn't have a campaign organization and fundraising is going poorly.

Corey was making $350K. A book would pay significantly more than that. Trump better have had a solid confidentiality agreement. Trump was in DC last week to give a deposition in a $10M suit against a chef who bailed on his new hotel.

You really can't tell me in Trump's heart he wants to be Prez. His ego may say it but his actions sure don't.

I am beginning to think he has been playing around all along just to see how far he can get and how much of GOP he can destroy.

I think he's amazed at how easy it was to manipulate and completely destroy the GOP.

He's been spouting off literally anything that comes to mind for the past year and was able to beat all other comers.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if he doesn't really want to be the POTUS and this was more about his ego/business than anything else.

Pretty long and in depth article on Politico about electoral math that Don is up against. In short if the "blue wall" holds, there are numerous paths to victory for HRC as she will have 247 EV's (this includes NM which really is no longer a swing state) and only needs 23 more. Florida does that trick by itself or combo's of VA, IA, NH, CO, OH, AZ, NC etc.

Meanwhile Trump's only narrow clear path goes through the industrial Midwest and would have to include PA, MI, WI, IA, OH. I could see OH if Kasich stands up for him, but can't see the rest at all as they are all fairly solid blue states. PA has trended a little more red lately but still a tough get.

Odds are creeping up from bookies that Trump doesn't even make it to the GE. Was at 6% last week, 14% today.

According to this, it was his kids:

After Months of Loyalty, Trump Finally Decided to Fire His Campaign Manager After a Bad Answer at a Meeting

At around 9:30 Monday morning, Donald Trump and his adult children gathered for a regular strategy meeting at Trump Tower. Also present were senior staff, including Corey Lewandowski, the campaign's embattled manager. With Trump coming off one of the worst weeks of his campaign — a stretch that included racist attacks on a federal judge, renewed calls in the wake of the Orlando massacre to ban Muslim immigrants, and sinking poll numbers — the candidate's children, who have been involved in strategy from the beginning, saw an opening to achieve a shared goal: Fire Lewandowski.

According to two sources briefed on the events, the meeting was a setup. Shortly after it began, the children peppered Lewandowski with questions, asking him to explain the campaign's lack of infrastructure. "They went through the punch list. 'Where are we with staffing? Where are we with getting the infrastructure built?'" one source explained. Their father grew visibly upset as he heard the list of failures. Finally, he turned to Lewandowski and said, "What's your plan here?"

Lewandowski responded that he wanted to leak Trump's vice-president pick.

And with that, Lewandowski was out. Trump has long viewed announcing his running mate at the GOP convention next month as a valuable card to play. He was shocked that Lewandowski didn't have any other ideas. Shortly after the meeting, Lewandowski was escorted out of the building by Trump security.

Meeting at 9:30am, fired by ~10:30am, story leaked by 4pm. Don't piss off Trump's kids.

That's awesome. Just like in the show.
