2016 rio olympic thread

You obviously don't remember the great Karch/Steffes team of the early 90s -- they were HUGE even before the Olympics. It was big news when Karch didn't team up with Timmons, but he won a lot of titles with Steffes, so I guess it worked out alright. Great rivalry with Randy Stoklos and Sinjin Smith.

Obviously it was that scene in Top Gun when Goose and Maverick played Iceman and Slider that led to the popularity of beach volleyball. At least that's what my wife told me.

If the armed robbery didn't happen, why did Lochte need to make up a story in the first place? Was he just out after curfew and had to have a story to get back into the athletes' village or is there something else he needed a story to cover up?

Lochte was meeting some side chick (probably Say Hey's volleyball girl) and his main lady was wondering where he was, so he lied and came up with that because he's really really stupid.

And it all got out of hand because he may be the dumbest person on earth.

This is the most likely answer.

Someone who knows him personally told me he is, in fact, really stupid.

Beach volleyball players are generally all arounders that are flawed in some way for the court at the elite level (too small, good but not elite setter, etc). Court is a land of extreme specialists and lots of great players through their 20s just end up left out.

How about trying this as an explanation for why players transition. What kind of money is there for professional court volleyball? Particularly in the United States.

Most don't play in the US. For example - my wife's younger cousin went and played in Italy, my sister played in England. For good but not elite international players like them, the money isn't great (and often is supplemented by coaching/training on the side) - more of the life experience thing (both are back in the states now and not playing anymore). For the elite international level players they can make quite a decent living playing in Europe (often in eastern Europe / Turkey). Nearly all of the USA Olympic team plays professional in those leagues - I know Jordan Larson plays in Turkey, for example.

I have less clue how the beach financials work, but the AVP tour is pretty popular and I assume the top teams do fairly well in terms of prize money and sponsorships.

Ato Boldon might be the best analyst on TV in any sport.

Been thinking the same thing. He knows his shit about everybody. Played the game himself (100m gold in Atlanta). Is a coach and is obviously biased toward his athletes and Caribbean sprinters but isn't a biased commentator.

Props to NBC for figuring out how to bring back the old NBA on NBC theme into a women's long jump graphic.

Boldon won bronze in the 100 and 200 in Atlanta. Donovan Bailey and Michael Johnson won Gold. Boldon won silver(100) and bronze(200) in Sydney.

Edited to Add: I agree he's a great announcer.

That de Grasse-Bolt finish is one of my all-time favorite sports things. I'm cracking up here by myself.
