Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

Don’t they currently have an easier route to the CFP in their current conference?

Texas will need 11 "yes" votes from current SEC institutions to join the conference. They are going to fall short of that.

This is contract negotiation posturing by Texas and OU aimed directly at FOX.

It could be a negotiating ploy but there is no way Texas would fail to get 11 votes. Way too much money to be made if their interest is legitimate.

So Bama and Auburn move to SEC East and Missouri to the SEC West (where they geographically belong already)?

E: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, USCjr, Kentucky, Tennessee, Vandy
W: Texas, aTm, OU, LSU, Arkansas, Mizzou, Ole Miss, Miss St

That’s a better league with a much more appealing SEC East schedule.

This will have to go through the state governments, right? Seems like it would doom the other Texas & Oklahoma state schools.

Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are both independently controlled, so there is no mechanism in the state government that could prevent Oklahoma from moving to the SEC and leaving Oklahoma State behind in a lurch.

Texas will face stronger pushback - there are a fair number of high ranking members of the state government who are UT alumni, while Baylor and Texas Tech alumni filled high ranking positions when those schools forced their way into the Big XII in the 90s.

OK. State/T.Boone Pickens U would be the most influential of the "left out" group. As noted above, aTm would be unhappy giving up their current advantage of being in the SEC while rival Texas is not. The left out schools in Texas (Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor etc.) don't have quite the influence in Texas that OK ST has in Oklahoma.

Not exactly sure why SEC would have interest in this as they already have plenty of money and allowing TX & OU in only makes it that much harder for schools to get to playoff due to a brutal conference schedule.

Considering that aTm already bolted without issue, I don't think there will be a problem there. Ann Richards isn't in office anymore.

Might be some pushback with OU/OSU, but nothing that can't be overcome.

With expansion to 12 teams, the road to the CFP playoff is about to get a whole lot easier, regardless of conference affiliation. And with the Big XII presumably set to become a dead conference, there would be one less team to make its case in either a 4 team or 12 team format.

Maybe FOX is regretting putting OU/NU at that 11am kickoff slot now...

Under normal circumstances, I might agree with you, but I think NIL sealed the deal. If conferences are going to self-police with regard to NIL, might as well go to the conference that will do the least amount of self-policing, otherwise the SEC's recruiting advantage becomes that much bigger.

I think this is just the first step in forming 4 16 conferences that will control the playoffs and the revenues, which will be shared with the players.

A possible scenario, more likely minus the last seven words.

Wichita State terminated its football program in 1986. The most notable event in Shocker football history was a plane crash that resulted in the deaths of about half their team in 1970. There has been talk of restarting the program, but given the cost to upgrade the stadium, fund the scholarships and add the women's scholarship sports to comply with Title IX, the idea of restarting Wichita State football has been viewed as cost prohibitive.

Sounds like it will be 4 four team divisions, you play your 3 division teams every year and 2 from the other three every year. So you play every team at least once every two years and host every team at least once every 4 years. Nine team conference schedule.
