Role of the Media

Hopefully we never have to hear about this punk again. Off to never never land.

Indeed. He became a hero to MAGAts like Angus, got an online speaking spot at the 2020 Republican National Convention, was hired to work in Mitch McConnell's reelection campaign, and got some unmerited cash from media outlets for his college education and beyond. Not bad for his 15 minutes of fame.

Sounds like you've been reading John Milton

If that’s the same as Reddit, sure!

Our priest used to say, there’s lots of stuff people worry about that Jesus didn’t talk about. But, he talked a lot about divorce and people don’t seem to care.

Breaking: if it bleeds it leads

Gas prices now falling at historic levels but nowhere near the breathless coverage the original rise got. People will still probably vote against Dems in November just due to gas prices, even if they continue to fall.

That’s a good find.

Media reports always frame the job report with respect to economists’ expectations. I don’t know how they get this seeming consensus of thousands of economists who study labor and related issues but it’s almost always wrong. Yet instead of simply reporting job growth as high or low or steady, they frame the facts as a “surprise” or “disappointment” instead of just saying economists were wrong.

The ABC News template is particularly galling because they already have a quote from an economist as if it’s hard to get them on the phone after 8:30 on Friday morning.

CNN and NBC settled with this little fucker. Should have stayed the course.

no comment from Angus? Really sucks that a couple of the networks settled with this fraud. What damages did this clown have for one?

Don’t cover it. If they don’t support a free press, don’t give them free press.

Good article about how mainstream media enables DeSantis.

https://presswatchers.org/2022/08/c...ows-the-media-has-learned-nothing-from-trump/

The media has also been suckers for DeSantis’s staged events. For instance, when he announced that his new police force had filed criminal voter-fraud charges against a tiny smattering of ex-cons, most reporters wrote it straight.

The real story, however, was how few people his police force found, who they targeted, and most importantly how, as the Miami Herald editorial board explained, the event was “actually about voter intimidation on the eve of an election.”

Even the coverage of DeSantis’s signature piece of fascist legislation is often muted. A recent AP story, for instance, simply reported that DeSantis “signed into law new guidelines Friday involving race-based discussions in businesses and schools as part of his campaign against critical race theory, which he called ‘pernicious’ ideology.”

No.

The law effectively bans open discussion in schools or private businesses of slavery, segregation, lynchings, and modern-day racism as a byproduct of racist conspiracy theories. It constitutes viewpoint-based restriction on private speech, which very clearly violates the First Amendment. And reporters should say so.

Given that the corporate conglomerate that now owns CNN is run and supported by Trumpites this turn to the right was probably inevitable. However, it's fool's gold to believe that Fox viewers will leave them to watch CNN. Why watch a formerly hated rival, no matter how conservative they now pretend to be, when you can just stick with the original real thing? And Fox can always outflank CNN on the right. This impending shift to the right likely isn't going to help CNN any in the ratings, although it will probably make their ownership happier.

CNN fired longtime WH correspondent John Harwood today, thus continuing its move to the right. Harwood was let go just hours after saying on CNN that “the core point [Biden] made in that political speech about the threat to democracy is true.”
