Role of the Media

The world would benefit if Twitter went away forever. Makes the Tunnels look like a love fest.

But then how would Republican president Trump communicate with his base?

Bret Stephens is a twit

Yet another weak-minded mediocre white dude who keeps gaining prominence for some reason.

Networks where members are, for example, randomly exposed to a range of views are less likely to experience cascades of unchallenged belief. The disproportionate significance of the first responses to a claim can be addressed by an engineered attention to sources, authenticity and provenance; and the public introduction of accurate information can, if a trusted source is involved, dispel false consensus.

Perhaps most significantly, the way in which social information ripples through a network can be understood in terms of rational reactions to uncertainty, rather than irrational impulses addressable only by further irrationalism. And the more we understand the chain of events that led someone towards a particular perspective, the more we understand what it might mean to arrive at other views – or, equally importantly, to sow the seeds of sceptical engagement.

When we either know very little about something, or the information surrounding it is overwhelming, it makes excellent sense to look to others’ apparent beliefs as an indication of what is going on. In fact, this is often the most reasonable response, so long as we have good reason to believe that others have access to accurate information; and that what they seem to think and what they actually believe are the same.

The bold is the issue.

It will be interesting to see how the Dem candidates react to this. Do they take the bait and legitimize Trump's treason? I don't think any of them will publicly, but you can definitely expect the Bernie Bros to pounce on it.

It's so clear that the so-called "liberal mainstream media" is going to do the same thing in 2020 that they did in 2016 - bosides everything, and refuse to put the actions of Trump and his cronies in any context compared to whomever the Dem nominee is. I actually don't think the NYT, WaPo, CNN, MSNBC, etc. would be all that upset with another Trump victory, as they could continue to milk all the controversy for ratings, subscriptions, and website hits for another four years. The only reason right-wingers think they're liberal is because, unlike Fox News, Fox Business, OAN, etc. they haven't completely turned themselves into 24/7 state propaganda for the GOP and Trump Administration. To them, anything that isn't blatantly and consistently pro-Trump is "liberal fake news." That's why so many of them hate Shepard Smith so much, even on Fox.
