Role of the Media

Conservatives are still trying to delegitimize Obama's presidency.

The press, branded the 'enemy' by Trump, increasingly trusted by the public: Reuters/Ipsos poll

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Americans are increasingly confident in the news media and less so in President Donald Trump’s administration after a tumultuous year in U.S. politics that tested the public’s trust in both institutions, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Tuesday.

...

The poll also found that the shift in trust was not simply a partisan reaction to a Republican president.

Drudge has a link to this article right now...labeled "Shock Poll!"

Here's how Fox News works:
-Pick (or make up) a divisive topic to push their agenda
-Dig up some random, completely irrelevant, ridiculous example of chosen topic
-Push it as national news
-Characterize it as a widespread symptom of the left
-Beat the dead horse
-Repeat

Example:
-Colleges are hotbeds of evil liberal indoctrination
-Finds some speaker at a meeting of the chess club from Greendale Community College who said Trump is to blame for the shooting at Las Vegas
-"FNC BREAKING NEWS: COLLEGE PROFESSOR BLAMES DONALD TRUMP FOR VEGAS MASSACRE"
-"Liberals are doing this EVERYWHERE! Why can't they respect the POTUS? The media won't let us have a voice!"
-"Liberals are doing this EVERYWHERE! Why can't they respect the POTUS? The media won't let us have a voice!"

Attacking Media as Distraction

Quote
————
President Trump keeps hammering away at the media, in part because of his own watch-too-much, read-too-little inclinations, but also because he needs a foil, now that he’s not actively locked in an election battle.

In July, The New York Times analyzed all the insults Trump had published on Twitter and concluded that “Mr. Trump usually picks out a couple of chief enemies and attacks them until they are no longer noteworthy to him. This can last weeks or even months.”

“Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton have all held Mr. Trump’s attention in this way. Nearly one in every three insults in the last two years has been directed at one of them. After winning the nomination, Mr. Trump narrowed his focus on Mrs. Clinton. After the election, his attention turned toward the subjects described above: primarily the media, Obamacare and the allegations of collusion.”

Strategy for Trump is all street fight, on the widest street, under the brightest light. And the media is an easy target, because it targets him. The press is in search of truths and Trump is a fount of lies, which makes them natural adversaries.

But these two institutional forces — the press and the presidency — operate under different codes, have different objectives and are held to different standards. While the press is, for the most part, properly exercising its power to shine light into places that the powerful would prefer remained dark, Trump is abusing his power by trying to squash dissent through defamation of individual journalists, individual shows and individual networks or newspapers.

This battle that Trump insists on maintaining also serves a wider goal for him: distraction. As long as we focus on the latest outrage he publishes on Twitter attacking one person or another, the less time we have to focus on the fact that his presidency thus far is a colossal legislative failure, his cabinet is an unending game of cloak and daggers meets musical chairs, his Justice Department is systematically and unrelentingly expressing its hostilities to equal rights, and Trump’s reckless, emotionally triggered language and actions are making us less safe by denigrating diplomacy and advocating military aggression...

...Trump’s attacks on the media are mere sideshow; the main events are his attacks on civil rights and his itching for a military attack on North Korea.

Conservatives should be more worried about losing someone like Kimmel than about Kimmel losing them.

There's also the humor of conservatives who don't care if liberals don't watch getting mad that a possible liberal doesn't care if they don't watch.

Gotta love Ben Stein's response in there.

I mean “conservative” boycotts just don’t have the power to move things. First you assume that the only ones willing to engage in a boycott centered around conservative ideas would be people engaged and enraged enough to boycott, so actual voters. Right there you only have 26% of eligible voters that voted for trump. After that you assume that there will be plenty of people that just don’t give a shit about an issue, then throw in people that voted but are against the issue being debated. You are probably under 5 percent of the population max that attempt to do something before just doing their opioids and forgetting about it.

conservatives are such winy shits...go ahead and boycott. just like conservative values, their boycotts are hollow.

It's Just Getting Worse For "Megyn Kelly Today"

Beating Live was the dream. Now that NBC News is in a waking nightmare surely the goal must be to not destroy Today's popular wine-soaked fourth hour with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. (NBCUniversal is an investor in BuzzFeed.) And while it's not total carnage in the ratings yet, the weaker lead-in from Megyn Kelly Today is certainly affecting Kathie Lee and Hoda: It's down both in total viewers and among 25- to 54-year-olds compared to the same weeks last year. In last year's demo ratings, Today's third hour (with Roker and Hall) drew a .8 in the first two weeks of the season and a .9 in the third week, handing a strong lead-in to Kathie Lee and Hoda. Megyn Kelly Today has drawn a .6, .5, and .6 during the same weeks, which leaves Today at 10 a.m. struggling to hold on: The results are double-digit declines when compared to the start of the 2016 season.

What a mind-bogglingly dumb move.
