Wine

I'm always looking for good wine values. Recently I found a really great one. An Italian red wine that's one of the best wines for the money (about 10 bucks at Total Wine) I've enjoyed in a while. Plus it's made with organic grapes to boot!

Here it is (I had a 2008, but the label is very similar to this older one): Saladini Pilastri Rosso Piceno.

I think it would be a great wine, if you prefer red, for most traditional Thanksgiving meals. This is a wine that even most wine snobs would enjoy...just don't tell them the price. ; )

Sorry, not sure if the North GA distributors sell Turley to the liquor stores up there. If you can't find it, I'd go with a Ridge (Geyserville, Lytton Springs or Three Valleys)

Not sure why, but I have always found Ridge over priced for what they are - their Zins are ok, but not $30+ - maybe I just haven't tried the right ones yet.

I am going to check out Pops.

While it's hard to find in the US, if you see a Uruguyan Tannat, give it a shot. I know most Totes Wine carries some. While I'm in Montevideo right now and have a choice advantage, I've had some in the states and it has been as good as what I had tonight (which was awesome). And it's relatively inexpensive.

For Thanksgiving went with a Frank Family Pinot Noir and Anne Amie Pinot Noir - both were fantastic.

Also ended up getting a bottle of the Boxer by Molly Dooker - hadn't had anything by Molly Dooker in a couple of years since they blew up and the price points doubled, like it much better now, very jammy for a shiraz.

Best wine of the weekend was 2006 Shafer One Point Five - holy crap is that an awesome cab, highly recommend for anyone who hasn't tried it before.

Some damn fine wines in this post.

Not to hijack, but our annual Thanksgiving weekend wine tasting tour plus DaDeacs' post about drinking Anne Amie pinot got me thinking that if any Quad posters ever make it out to Oregon and want to hit a few Willamette Valley wineries, I'd be more than happy to show you around. My wife and I are also members at quite a few places, so I can get you free tastings and other occasional swag.

Just hit me up via PM if anyone ever wants to find out firsthand why Oregon pinots are superior to California pinots.

Am looking at a trip to Oregon in May - I know there is a big festival/event thing in the Willamette Valley then, I was going to go this year, but couldn't get everything situated. Hoping to be able to this year.

Crapshoot - any insight into the Memorial Weekend event? Worth the trip cross country?

Damn, where were you the years I covered the Northwest? I am a huge fan of their wines, especially the Pinots

Not a huge wine drinker, but really like an Argentinian Malbec

My experience with wineries is that you're always better served going when it's less crowded. You get more personal attention, so you learn more about the wines, plus some places will hook you up with special discounts or let you try wines that aren't on the tasting menu. It's also usually cheaper, and a lot of places will waive the tasting fee if you buy wine.

The benefit of going on the holiday weekends (like Memorial Day and Thanksgiving) is that you'll get perks like food pairings, library tastings and keepsake Pinot glasses, but you also have to fight big crowds and pay an inflated entrance charge.

It's a matter of personal preference. I usually brave the crowds once a year at Thanksgiving and then stick to weekday tastings the rest of the year. That said, a cross-country trip to Oregon in May or June for some low-key wine tasting would still be worth it in my opinion. There's lots to do, but the weather can still be, ahem, a bit of a crapshoot that time of year. Let me know if you are thinking about coming out here and I can hook you up with more info.

I am hosting a 50th wedding aniversary part for my parents this weekend and we want to serve sparklers along with all the other booze. What are some good priced Proseccos or Cavas that I could serve up?

#10 Piper Sonoma Brut Non-Vintage
Green’s Cash Sale Price: $9.95
Bottle Cash Price With 15% Case Discount: $8.46 + Tax

This sparkling wine specialist, established by the famous French Champagne house Piper-Heidsieck in 1980, makes one of California’s finest bubbly values. Made by the traditional methode champenoise, the same process from which French Champagne is made, all of the fruit for this wine is sourced from Sonoma County.

The comparison with French Champagne continues as it is produced from the same grape varieties they use: Chardonnay (60%), Pinot Noir (15%), and Pinot Meunier (25%). This awardwinning sparkler (a gold medal winner at the prestigious 2011 San Francisco International Wine Competition) is a spectacular

buy. Lemon and yeasty notes on the bouquet, it is dry, with hints of yeast on the palate. This bubbly is delightfully refreshing and the perfect accompaniment to your holiday festivities. Lots of quality here for the money!

I've been eating at your mom's Y for years...and lately at your gfs...
