Ongoing Dem Debacle Thread: Commander will kill us all

You may be right about that, but I bet he would have been pretty quickly dismissed in most discussion as having "no experience". Certainly not thought of as seasoned or viable for 2008.

Probably so, but Clinton did not get the vacuum primary she had this time around. Biden was a viable candidate in that field too.

Disagree about 2006. That convention speech really put him on the map.

He was still a virtual unknown. Trump had nearly 100% name recognition and the economy had not yet fallen apart. At best Obama could have been a VP pick.

Realistically, I'd like to see a Sanders-type with a little more multicultural appeal and a good bit younger. I don't know that that exists, but that's the idea. The problem is that the Democrat roster is made up of establishment people for obvious reasons.

Think Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. She's a 36 year old Iraq War Vet and member of the House Armed Services Committee She served as Vice Chair of the DNC before resigning to openly support Bernie Sanders. Supposedly there was a big rift between her and Wasserman-Schultz and Donna Brazile who were both on the Hillary train.

“As a veteran, as a soldier, I’ve seen firsthand the true cost of war,” she said, calling it a “necessity” to “have a commander-in-chief who has foresight, who exercises good judgment, who looks at the consequences of the actions that they are looking to take before they take those actions, so that we don’t continue to find ourselves in these failures that have resulted in chaos in the Middle East and so much loss of life.”

I think Mark Warner will be in the conversation as the moderate establishment candidate.

Gillibrand seems cool. I like Harris too.

Mark would be a great POTUS, but personality isn't his strong suit.

Yep. I'm all in based on what I've seen here. Love that she's gone toe to toe with the DNC brass.

yeah. real talk, she'd get a ton of points for that in both the primaries and the general.

but man, the south and midwest would lose their damn minds over her. i kinda wanna see that.

In all seriousness, she is not nearly liberal enough to be a factor for the Dems nationally. I think the Democratic Party is in for some real soul searching. If not for the superdelegates they might have nominated a Socialist. They have run most of the moderates out of the party.

I don't know. She'd come across as a Hawaiian Nikki Haley. But the Hindu/Hawaiian wedding pics may spook people.

this is what i told townie but he said I was bigly wrong :noidea:

Perhaps the thing I've hated most about the Clinton post-2000 is that everything they've done was geared toward getting Hillary into the White House. They've only developed a bench to the extent to which it would help her.

Barack and Michelle and the Bidens have a chance to do some real good that the Clintons never did. I would like to see them identify and mentor young Democrats from state and local politics and business who have the potential to run in 2018 and 2020. I want them to find the next Barack Obama and use their PACs and political capital to give them a shot in running for Republican senate seats with one or two running for president.

People keep talking about superdelegates, but Hillary won a large majority of actual votes.

The "Socialist" wing of the Democrat party is way overstated. Bernie got traction because he was running against Hillary. He would have gotten nowhere against a Biden. To the extent there are hardcore socialists, they're a small part of the party and would likely be content to push a charismatic moderate left like they did with Obama.

also, in what way is gabbard not liberal enough? look at her policy positions

Came in here to say Tulsi - glad she was mentioned. Her open fight with the DNC this year would probably actually be beneficial going forward.

I think she's young and charismatic enough to rally the base. I really like her.

She won votes where any Democrat with a pulse would win votes. She lost rust belt liberal independents because of her neo-liberal centrist economic platform. The Dem party is going nowhere without blue collar populists.

there is a YUGE populist sentiment from both parties this year. i'm assuming the donald destroys that for most people, but let's not pretend bernie was JUST not-hillary.

There is a reason the GOP controls the WH, Senate, House and most of the statehouses. And Obama's agenda was anything but moderate, regardless of how you wish to characterize it. If the Dems keep going in the same direction they are capped on how successful they can be.
