Ongoing Dem Debacle Thread: Commander will kill us all

he'll also be 78 fucking years old
You're right. We need a young socialist who wants to regulate wall st trading, raise minimum wage to 15/hr, de-militarize the police, socialize health care, pull our military out of the middle east, end Palestinian apartheid, legalize marijuana, abolish the privatized prison system, end the war on drugs, and so on

No. "This is a problem" and "this is how to solve the problem" are different things completely. "Free college" and "$15" aren't policies. They're slogans.

I don't think his personality is party of his appeal at all. Young progressives would quickly flock to Gabbard or anybody else who voices their concerns. Bernie was "not Hillary" at a time people were desperate for "not Hillary."

Do you really think young progressives would rather support this?

Over this?

I talk to plenty of "young progressives", Ph. I appreciate your opinion, but I dont consider you one. If you talk to a lot of your students about politics, you could share some of that information with me. Regarding popularity/charisma/personality, there are a lot of different things that make olderl people popular. Larry David is popular, Betty White is popular, Joe Biden is popular. Youth is not personality, though some political strategists might clumsily try to use youth as a stand-in for personality

Bernie's age isn't the issue. I think Warren would have been much more popular than Bernie if she had run.

But since you talk to plenty "young progressives" (something a college professor like myself just isn't able to do), what do they like about Bernie that they don't like about other progressives like Gabbard?

I don't think they necessarily prefer Bernie over other progressives, they just find his crotchety old hippie bit to be charming and authentic.

Authenticity is Bernie's biggest appeal. He is the opposite of John Edwards despite having a similar "two America's" message and it is extremely appealing.

That’s true. He’s been saying the same thing for a long time.

Yes he has a track record. There are pictures of him being arrested at civil rights protests in the 60's, while all his colleagues were polishing their resumes for a career in politics.

Bernie does have the name recognition and popularity now, so it might be best for him to remain relevant for as long as possible while the progressive wing develops a bench.

The bench is developed--they now have John Kerry so no need to worry. hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

To be clear, I would prefer a younger candidate, but if I have to choose between Bernie or a younger centrist democrat, I would take Bernie all day. Depending on the day, Kamala Harris and Cory Booker say all the right things, but their legislative records aren't progressive enough for me, and they don't focus nearly enough on economic inequality.

C'mon Hillary...take one for the team and maintain a low profile until 2021.

NED, the Clintons' egos will not permit them to fade off into the sunset, which is where we all want them to go. But Hollywood hasn't figured this out yet.

Here Are the Democratic Primaries You Should Be Watching This Year

The fact that Dan Lipinski is in Congress is an embarrassment to democracy, not to mention the Democrats. His father, Representative Bill Lipinski, was an old-style Daley machine Democrat—socially conservative but willing to bring home the bacon for his constituents in a safely Democratic seat. In 2004 he decided to retire. But he waited until after the Democratic primary to do so. That means instead of the voters choosing the replacement nominee the local Chicago ward bosses did. And you know who ran the powerful 23rd Ward? Why, none other than Representative Bill Lipinski.

Remarkably, until now Lipinski hasn’t faced an organized primary challenge. But Marie Newman, a local small business owner and activist, has decided to finally take him to task and give the Third the type of representation it deserves. Lipinski has swamped her in terms of fundraising and can still count on labor support, but a bevy of progressive and pro-choice groups have endorsed Newman. Other congressmen have turned on Lipinski too, even one representing a neighboring district. It’ll be interesting to see whether the newly angry masses will be able to knock off Lipinski the Second and last.

"White Americans should learn yoga’s history, acknowledge the cultural appropriation they engage in and possibly reduce the cost of yoga classes for poor people, a group that often includes people of color and “recent immigrants, such as Indian women to whom this practice rightfully belongs,” Gandhi argued."

Hmmm. Just doesn't have the same ring to it as other Gandhi quotes.

To be fair, I think there's somewhere else a lot of people would like the Clinton's to go.
