Ive never understood how the media is in the tank for Dems. Our win-loss record over the past 16 years is shitty. How have you arrived at that?
As a registered Dem who identifies as a Republican (but voted for Hillary and Cooper), I'll take a shot. I see overall media skewing towards Dems, but not in the tank for them. I heard last night that only one major newspaper (Las Vegas) endorsed Trump and that was probably because Trump is pro-casino. I totally get why newspapers would not endorse Trump, but the overwhelming nature is surprising given the divided electorate. In past elections, my belief/memory is that Bushes, Dole, McCain and Romney didn't rack up a lot of endorsements either. Not sure if that is a business decision...newspapers are based in larger cities (skew Dem), but at least now are mostly subscribed to by olds (skew Pub)...or the editors lean Dem for one reason or another.
As far as TV, I feel the 3 networks skew Dem, but aren't in the tank for them by any means. Rarely watch CNN, but their website definitely skews Dem. They loved Trump in the primaries, because he drew views. Over the last few months, there was a definite bias towards Hillary (understandable), but there was no question in headlines, locations, stories and photos used who they were supporting.
I lump late night stuff into the media as well. Colbert, John Oliver and Seth Meyers are getting far my viewers than they did 4 years ago and they were all very anti-Trump (again, very understandable). A lot of the late night guests, be they actors, comedians or musicians, would comment on how awful Trump is. This happened to a lesser degree in the past few election cycles. Certainly, there are wealthy celebs that support Trump and are hardcore Republicans. Maybe that is an assumption I am making, since freaking Scott Baio was the best they could do at their convention. However, I think actors, etc. don't want to "come out" and say they are Republican. It's easy for an artist to say they are a Dem. The Democratic party is the more socially inclusive party; that's what you want to be a part of if you are selling something IMO. Unless you are Toby Keith, I don't know how saying you are a Republican would help your brand.
SNL does a good job on their political stuff, but they skewered Trump and Palin. Baldwin was brilliant as Trump, but you know he wanted to make him be the biggest asshole possible. Contrast that to how Hammond portrayed Trump in the primaries and pre-debates. Bill Clinton was portrayed as a lovable womanizer, Obama (his character portrayal was so bland it's hard to remember anything that was negative about him). Both Bushes were portrayed as idiots.
tl;dr Personally, I think media bias is real, particularly if you extend media to the entertainment industry, but the media aren't historically in the tank for the Dems.
