How to link your iPhone to TV

So trying to get my iPhone 6 to link to my TV. I have the "lightning" charger which hooks to he I It when I hook the hdmi to the TV nothing.

Any suggestions besides buy Apple TV which seems to be the Apple Store answer
 
Many of the new TVs have an app. Otherwise, I suspect you will need an Apple TV.
 
Chromecast works with some apps on an iPhone. What exactly are you trying to put on the tv?

My parents have decided to go without cable, or dish or anything else but free TV. I was told that we could stream es p or movies from the iPhone to their TV. Stream isn't the right word but there you go
 
apple tv and stream it but I think you can do an hdmi to lightning adapter too but those aren't as reliable.
