I dig end of the world books and movies so I gave those left behind books a try and let's just say that ....they sucked. The worst written, hamfisted, schlock I have ever read. I gave up after the first two
Several years ago I visited some relatives (hardcore fundies) one afternoon with my parents. They had the entire Left Behind series on a shelf, so while they all talked, I pulled one off the shelf (I don't remember the title, I think it was Soul Harvest). I skimmed through it, and it was terrible. I've seen comic books with better character development. It was very cartoonish and simplistic, no subtlety at all. The born-again good guys ("Tribulation Force") were pure and noble, loudly praising Jesus, and they were immune to the tortures and punishments given to everyone else. The bad guys were comically bad, especially the Antichrist, who sneered, chuckled, and schemed like a silent-movie villain. Female characters were either pure and maidenly Christians or shameless sluts who sleep with the Antichrist, there's no in-between. My favorite part was when God sent a plague of killer locusts to torment unbelievers, which was basically anybody the Religious Right hated. One of the good guy fundies gets trapped in a house with a scientist, who suddenly realizes the error of his ways in thinking the Earth was billions of years old, or that maybe global warming existed, and stares in fear at the little bugs trying to get inside to bite him. If they bite you, you experience agonizing, unbearable pain for weeks that no known painkiller can help. Of course, the bugs eventually get the scientist (who tries to renounce science and embrace the Religious Right, too late), while our hero, thanks to Jeezus, escapes unharmed.
Judging from that one book, the whole series is basically torture porn in which fundamentalists can fantasize about all the groups and people they resent and hate (scientists, non-Christian religions, snooty academics, secular humanists) being proven to be completely wrong about everything, and are given increasingly horrible punishments for being wrong, while our heroes get to gloat and praise Jesus for being right about everything. Even many Christians are portrayed as not "real" Christians, such as most Catholics (one Pope gets raptured because he's conservative, but the new Pope joins the Antichrist), and some Mainline Protestants, like Episcopalians (Anglicans). That there are millions of people who really believe this stuff is frightening.
