Middle East: Saudis Murder & Dismember Washington Post Contributor

Sounds like retaliation for an Israeli strike in Syria. The US consulate was apparently under construction and unoccupied, so doubtful it was the main target.

Seems like a good target to send a message with no casualties.

Yeah, could be. Seems like they'd be more likely to attack Israel more directly, but could be poking the US while they're busy epsewhere.

I think this is by far the most likely answer.

Feel like Iraq is the scapegoat here. They do that to Israel, that sparks a broader war, right?

Not as macabre as beheading a journalist but still probably deserves a bit more outrage than was given here in the US. Independent investigations have determined it was Israeli military and not Palestinian gunmen who murdered American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, with some going on to say it appears to have been a targeted attack. The Israeli government immediately blamed Palestinians for her death.

It should be a pretty huge deal that Israelis killed an American journalist.

The final three bullets came about two minutes after the first two rounds were fired.

Sharif al-Azab, a Jenin resident, said he was in a friend’s car near the scene of the shooting when he heard gunfire and shouting. Hoping to help, Mr. al-Azab tried to cross the road to get to Ms. Abu Akleh but stepped back, he said, after he saw three Israeli soldiers down the street with guns raised.

Mr. al-Azab, 20, sprinted across the road and behind the wall where Ms. Abu Akleh had been trying to shield herself. He climbed over the wall and crouched down next to Ms. Abu Akleh, about two minutes after she was killed in the second burst of gunfire, to try to pick her up. But a shot flashed past, forcing him up against the wall.

He ushered Ms. Hanaysha out of the line of fire before turning back to Ms. Abu Akleh to try again. He hooked his hands underneath her arms, half lifting, half dragging her body to his friend’s car.

As he did so, two more bullets flashed past.

Three rounds of gunfire, at a group of journalists, and then at the people trying to save them.

It should be but if you criticize bad actors in the Israeli government, you’ll be treated like you hate Jewish people.
