Wake Forest Football Recruiting

While Clawson has voiced that he prefers to stay away from the portal unless it’s dire need, I’m sure the one position he does NOT want to use the portal for is QB. With all the reads that are required, ideally you want the QB to have two years in the system before he takes 500+ game snaps

Yet Wolford and Hartman started as true freshmen.

Anybody know whether the coaching staff has any interest in Rashaud Pernell?

I would highly doubt it. He lost his spot at VT for being a knucklehead. Not clear what the exact circumstances were but that's not the type of guy they would normally pursue.

The word is that Martin is the real deal.

If a defensive has elite corners, the allows the DC to get very creative. WE has Carson, Holmes and Now Martin. Decent chance that all 3 draw NFL paychecks.

Important to shore up the CB position. Carson and Holmes are fantastic but the depth there was worrisome. Starting to feel ok about the defense.

I viewed his Hudl highlights. Looks like he played mostly against slot receivers. Also did some blitzing from his corner spot.

Wonder if this means Wingfield and the Rs Frosh weren’t matching up well

Or, when you have the opportunity to bring in an older, experienced guy that high on NFL draft projections, you do it. With teams playing lots of multiple wide receiver sets, extra corners are necessary. Both in corner/nickel packages and as backups to keep fresh legs on the field.

One of the reasons some guys are 3* recruits is because they are not quite physically mature. As a guy in his last year of eligibility, he is likely more mature and is definitely more experienced than the young guys.

From hearing comments, Clawson/Lambert/Williams would like to have 4-6 guys above the playable line at CB. Jermal Martin looks like he is one of the guys who is above the line for 2022.

Pretty much what I've heard. They've liked him since he hit the portal, but had to work towards graduating, which was in the interview with him, so it's not something that someone didn't perform.

Jones and Wingfield had pretty good spring camps, and Coby is healthy again, but that's five bodies for a team that's going to want to throw out three corners more than 50% of the time. Felt like they needed a body, especially with them seeming to have pissed off the football gods resulting in them having DBs getting injured every year, and allow the three freshmen to come in and see if they surprise them and earn a spot versus throwing them to the wolves out of pure need

Whether Martin is the obvious starter or not, it's nice to have depth.

I expect JJ Roberts to have a big year. He made some incredible plays during the NC State game, including an interception off of perfect coverage.

When you get good, you have options and depth. Gone are the days of "the good news is everybody is back, the bad news is everybody is back". Our ability to attract quality players through the portal lets us get that quality experience. Not every one has to be an all-star. This is a great pick-up that should make us better.
