Wake Forest Football Recruiting

Nice blurb in an ACC recruiting write up.

Wake Forest isn’t the easiest Power 5 school to recruit to, given the university’s small size, but coach Dave Clawson is doing just fine. Of the Demon Deacons’ top five recruits since 2000, four are either already on campus or coming soon. That includes four-star cornerback Antonio Robinson, of Beechwood (Ky.) High School, who committed in June. Robinson, the nation’s No. 382 prospect, chose the Demon Deacons over offers from Florida, LSU, Miami, Penn State, Texas and others.

Clawson and his staff are known for their ability to develop players who might not be recruited at the highest level. Just think what the Demon Deacons might be capable of if they start landing recruits such as Robinson on a consistent basis.

Clawson and company might just be getting started.

Seems Like Coach R has done a very good job of developing QBs for this system. Woolford, Newman, and Hartman. I trust that Griffis and Kern can get it done as well.

With this lull in recruiting news, perhaps time for a new recruiting thread for class of 24 and beyond.

Well not really a lull, just nothing here. Clemson offered Khalil Barnes last week and Les and Cam had reactions from most of the ‘23 commits and ‘24 prospects at the game noting the effort, never say die and Atmoshere (student section awesomeness)

Thanks for the heads up. That's a good read. The quotes from Barnes make it look like Clemson's plan backfired. It's incredible to see recruits mention the crowd as a plus.

Barnes even brought a potential PWO RB teammate with him

Never thought I'd live to see it

I met the Dad of one of our FB recruits today. Great guy.

It sounds like his son is fully committed to WF, but he is still getting worked pretty hard by a big-name school and one of our rivals.

Perhaps most interesting is the pitch Duke made, and presumably is making, for football recruits. NIL $$

Khalil Barnes' dad?

Hope he enjoys getting lost on the depth chart at Clempson and transferring to West Georgia after a couple of years.

We've gotten some decommits back before haven't we? Mustapha and Claiborne, maybe? But that doesn't sound cool.

Claiborne never decommitted. Mustapha was never offered out of HS, went to Richmond then transferred to Wake. I can't recall anyone recently that has decommitted then come back. Generally, that's extremely rare in CFB unless it's one of those committed as a sophomore, realized they want to go through the recruiting process then ultimately choose the original school situations.

UGA and Clemson have now offered Barnes. Think about it. Bad in the short run, but it shows where WF recruiting is going. Not wrapped up in rankings, but when two top five programs are offering your committed players that shows an elevated level of recruiting. Clawson and staff are great, but they aren't coaching a bunch of FCS level players, the talent level of the program is climbing that is obvious every Saturday. Only getting stronger.

the bigger question is do we stay fighting for him or is it - if you can't keep a commitment - best wishes. I seem to recall someone wanting to explore options and we pulled the scholly or was that hoops and a different coach.

Mustapha committed as a transfer and then very briefly waivered a bit on his commitment, thinking about UL, before (thankfully) reaffirming it

Good post, Pilch. The other thing about Barnes is that it gives Clawson a chance to beat UGA and Clemson for a recruit.
