Wake Forest Football Recruiting

Are they in the lowest classification status in NC or the 2nd lowest? Also didn't James Brim come from up there too?

Yes on Brim. Classification is 1A. Notre Dame has offered Greene. We need to get him locked up.

But is he better than Bersin?

Brim? James came along before the star rating system, but he would likely have been a high 4 or 5 star today. He was recruited by everyone because of his combination of size (6'4") and speed (4.3). He might be the highest ranked recruit in modern WFU football history. Green is big and fast, and has better hands than Brim, but he's no Brim. Yet.

I think highest recruit honor would probably go to Bryan Andrews or Bill Armstrong.

Bill Armstrong was a QB out of high school and played the position until his soph year at Wake. He was a tackling machine after his position change. Chuck Mills was a genius!

It's funny. He looked like a big, slow QB but an amazingly quick free safety.

"Bill's knocked down more arials than a near-sighted eagle" Anyone else remember that line?

"We're the same as the team we're playing this Saturday, except they're bigger, stronger and faster"

Chris Leak

CJ, Chris went to Florida. Brim also held the Vikings record for yardage in a game, until the NFLPA had the strike breakers stats washed away. He was smooth. A taller, faster Wayne Baumgartner.

Brim wasn't quick off of the line, but once he got started he could fly. On national signing day, Dick Crum and Al Groh were both at Brim's front door at daylight. Two assistant coaches got into a fight but Brim signed with the Deacs. Every top 10 school offered Brim. He visited UCLA, Ohio St. and Alabama. Groh pulled of a recruiting coup by signing Brim. James was a football equivalent of Rodney Rogers as far as recruiting ratings but of course one football player can't have near the same impact as a basketball player.

Is this true? Unsure if real or absurd hyperbole.

Not sure about the fight part, and it was long before football recruiting news/evals became the industry that it is now, but yes, WF signing James Brim was a huge deal in the 1980s. Brim was a Parade HS All American and was offered by everybody. Groh raised the level of recruiting at WF.

My impression was that Brim was a singleton. Great get, but we never had a supporting cast as usual. Second and third best recruits by Groh were Proehl and Elkins, respectively. But Groh didn't win with them; Dooley did.

The fight happened. I grew up in MA and was at WFU law when Brim was being recruited. Crum attended several MAHS games that fall (Brim was the #1 recruit in NC) and wanted Brim badly as a free safety, but James wanted to play WR and Groh was running a pro-style passing game. Brim's older brother worked at RJR and was a Deacon fan, so things fell into place for us. Brim had a great career and has done well post WFU, so it worked out well for him as well.

I watched Greene play tonight. He won't have big stats because his QB can't throw the ball and his coach doesn't use any imagination to get the ball into his hands. He returned an interception 95 yards for a TD but only had 2 catches. He's a legit 6'3", has long arms, big hands and can fly. He's a great leaper in basketball. He's definitely an ACC athlete and we need to wrap him up before he gets more P5 offers. It would really suck if Fedora came in late to steal him. We had him in camp this summer and were the first to offer.
