'17 Specials & '18 Midterms Thread

Thank God for tomorrow! No more calls and no more 100s of political snail mails per week until the fall.

That NY Donovan / Grimm district is a Trump +10 district and Donovan won reelection in 2016 with over 60% of the vote. So far the likely Dem challenger has out-raised both Republicans.

I wonder if they realize the shit they helped make.

My guess is they don't care. They've been buying off Republicans for years, now that they've lost control of at least some Republicans to the Trumpite wing, it seems as if their new strategy is simply to start buying centrist Democratic politicians from the Wall Street, Clinton wing of the Democratic Party. It's disgusting and disturbing, but I'm surprised they hadn't thought of this earlier - instead of buying influence and power in just one political party, why not both? I'm sure there are some Democrats that would be happy to privately take some large campaign contributions from the Kochs.

We’ll see how Koch Dems fare in primaries.

Big day. Primary elections in California, Alabama, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, New Jersey, Iowa, and South Dakota.

The Early Races To Watch On The Biggest Primary Day Of 2018

The Late Races To Watch On The Biggest Primary Day Of 2018

There are also DA races all across California and a few special elections.

In California state senate district 29, Democrat Josh Newman is facing a recall initiated by Republicans because he voted to increase the taxes on gas. Three Democrats and three Republicans filed to run against him. The ballot will start with a question, yes or no to the recall, then a vote for his replacement. So things could get weird.

In Missouri there is a special election for state senate district 17. The incumbent Republican won by 20 pts in 2016 after winning with a smaller margin in 2012.

McConnell canceling summer vacation so do nothing congress can continue to do nothing. Also, Dems can't campaign.

Dem won with 60% of the vote. More on how the district voted in 2016:

A husband, father, scientist, and Orange County business leader, Dr. Hans Keirstead is one of the world’s leading innovators in stem cell research and medical treatments.

Raised on a farm by a single mother, Hans has been working to help support his family since the age of nine. Times were not always easy for them, and there were days he would come home unsure if there would be dinner for him and his family. Hans understands firsthand the struggles many hard-working Americans face today. He is eager to have the opportunity to use his work ethic in Washington, DC and help the people of Orange County achieve their piece of the American Dream.

Inspired by his parents to help others, Hans went to college to become a physician but soon shifted to research. His aim was to develop more effective treatments to save and improve lives. He served for 15 years as Professor of Anatomy at UCI and led therapy breakthroughs for late-stage cancers, ALS and spinal cord injury.

Hans has successfully launched multiple medical research companies in Orange County and is currently CEO at AIVITA Biomedical, where he is focusing on developing a cancer treatment that is proving to be the most effective treatment for cancer that has ever reached the final phase of clinical trials.

He has advised several members of Congress and U.S. Senators on healthcare and biotechnology. When then President George W. Bush issued an executive order banning federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, Hans stepped up to help fill the void. Serving as lead scientific advisor for the California Stem Cell Initiative (Proposition 71), he toured the state to promote the ballot measure. He spoke to hospital leadership, unions, professors, doctors, nurses, and activists. Passing with nearly 60% of the vote, Proposition 71, established a $3 billion stem cell research fund to support medical innovation in California.

Hans’ wife, Niki, is a leading neuroscientist focused on Alzheimer’s disease. Hans, Niki, and their son, Connor, are proud to call Laguna Beach their home. In his spare time, Hans enjoys playing guitar and practicing martial arts with Connor.

Damn. He's an impressive dude.

Also what's the deal with write in votes in the CA general election? If the Democrats get locked out of a district tonight, can they try for a write-in campaign in the general?
